D i c k Fosbury, Dead at 76

It's wild how in less than a decade after '68 Olympics, Fosbury technique made "the roll" largely obsolete.

From article:

The Montreal Games in 1976 marked the last Olympics in which a high jumper won a medal using a technique other than the Fosbury Flop.

I was a high-jumper wanna-be in Junior High at the time all this became a thing.

I never had the nerve to jump over the bar backwards.

And I never had the talent to go very high frontwards, so my career was short, just like my jumps.

I, too, was a failed junior high high-jumper. I was incapable of grasping the Fosbury technique, despite coaching efforts ... I did the roll instead, and didn't do well at it anyway.

I switched to long jump halfway thru 7th grade season, and stuck with that through senior year. Smartest personal sports-related decision I ever made. (Although I sucked at long jumping in 7th grade, too)

I was the opposite. Started high jumping ~1980 and never knew any different than the flop. I tried the front roll and it felt completely wrong and I stunk at it.

Gotta respect innovators like Fosbury who weren't afraid of being mocked if they believed in a better way.

I remember it being referred to as the "western roll" that the Fosbury flop replaced, is that right? Dic Fosbury won the gold with a jump of 2.24m ( 7' 4"); the world record is currently 2.45m which is a little over 8 feet! How can someone defy gravity by jumping over something taller than they are?! I think high jumping is amazing...

who else has revolutionized their sport/event more?
Maybe Roger Bannister running a sub 4 mile proving to the world it was possible. Although if he didn't do it someone else would have.

If Fosbury didn't change his technique it's hard to say if/when anyone would have done it.

Respectfully RIP. But I can't believe he didn't go with his first name for coining the move. D i c k Flop just rolls off the tongue.

I'm not saying these people changed it more but they are in the discussion.

Edwin Moses took 13 steps between hurdles instead of 15.
Patrick Roy changed how goalie was played.
Serena and Venus did stuff that other coaches taught not to do.
Magic Johnson played point guard at 6'9". At the time, a 6'9" player was told to play power forward.
Robert Brazile basically created the 3-4 pass-rushing outside linebacker position.
