Better Freshman Season : Lipsey or Hunter?

Closer than I think most would've guessed or predicted entering the season. I like Tamin's instincts a lot better than Tyrese's. They are a wash defensively, if anything I would maybe give Tamin a slight edge. Where I'd give Tyrese a slight edge is his athleticism and being able to beat guys off the dribble. Quite a bit more distant gap in their abilities to shoot from distance, with Tyrese having a pretty big leg up there, especially in Big 12 and NCAA Tournament play a year ago. Overall, I think you give Tyrese the nod, but the gap is much closer than I could've dreamed it would be entering the season. I had no idea what to expect out of Tamin. 3-4 ppg, 2-3 apg and praying he just wasn't gonna blow it.

Give me Lipsey at the rim though.
I loved Tyrese last year but Lipsey is a much better true PG and to your point, a much better finisher at the rim. You could probably count on one hand how many times Tamin has been swatted on a layup this year, whereas Tyrese was getting his stuff sent back multiple times a game.

And Tyrese missed often if in close. If Lipsey misses it's a surprise.

Hunter was tad better scorer and obviously in the NCAAs. Lipsey had a better pure game facilitator season with fewer turnovers.

Part of it is because Hunter was more aggressive trying to score. In part because he had to be. Lipsey picks his spots and doesn't force any shots and at times that has actually hurt ISU's offense.

I think though overall it is pretty equal. Maybe a slight edge to Hunter.

I really go back and forth when breaking this down. Tyrese certainly flashed a higher ceiling but was more erratic and less efficient. Tamin is without a doubt who I would rather build around going forward. Intangibles matter, in our program especially.

Tamin will need to improve offensively and be surrounded with scoring but he is elite in many other areas.

PRPG!: Tie (1.8)
Offensive rating: Tamin (102.7) >>> Tyrese (90.8)
Assists: Tyrese (4.9) > Tamin (4.6)
Turnovers: Fairly equal when factoring in usage
Steal rate (Both elite): Tamin (4.5) > Tyrese (3.8)
Free throw shooting: Tamin (76%) > Tyrese (69%)
2PT FG%: Tamin (53.9) > Tyrese (46.2%)
3PT FG%: Tyrese (27.4%) > Tamin (17.4%)

Idk if I'd give tyrese the edge off the dribble. Maybe a little bit better but he could shoot so people had to actually guard him. Either way once he beat someone he wasn't great at finishing or passing in the lane so it wasn't necessarily productive like Lipsey can be. The big thing Tyrese was better at was shooting from 3

Honest answer, not even a hindsight evaluation - Tamin Lipsey is already one of my favorite players to watch at any level for any team.
Being able to watch from a TV angle gives you so many advantages to see and know what players should do and where to go. Yet he is able to anticipate and make plays that surprise me. He comes seemingly out of nowhere to make plays on the ball to keep possessions alive or create turnovers.

I'll be curious to see how Tamin improves through his sophomore season.
We have already seen what Hunter did for his sophomore season, and it was underwhelming.
So underwhelming that I had to go back and look to see if he had the worst year to follow up winning Big 12 Freshman of the Year.

Spoiler alert, Tyrese Hunter is the worst performing sophomore after receiving the accolade.

If you look back at the previous winners going to the 2005-06 season (which is when the NBA changed their rules to not allow high school players to be selected in the NBA Draft), there was only one other player that failed to be selected to an all-conference team or be playing in the NBA. That was Willie Warren from Oklahoma who had a season ending surgery on an ankle. Then he went to the NBA.
I put the full results table I compiled as a spoiler at the end of this post.

You have to keep going way back to pre-Jake Sullivan days to see a player legitimately not perform at an all conference level after being Freshman of the Year.

Also of note, unless they went to the NBA, this is the first time a Big 12 Freshman of the Year did not play for the same college team the next year.
I think this was the biggest reason for Hunter's regression. It's not always easy to transfer in college basketball, and he seemed to pick one of the worst destinations for a fit of his playing style.
