Really enjoyed this. CMC sounds calmer and wiser by the year. I like that he emphasized there was no panic in the offseason, just thoughtful reflection and then action to help make the program better. Thanks Chris!

Enjoyed the glimpses into his family life at the beginning and his thoughts on NFL rosters at the end. It's evident that he follows the league closely, and it was cool to hear his perspective.

I also thought it was cool when he mentioned that our guys in the NFL all want to come back and train here in the offseason. That says a lot about the culture the staff has established here and will probably do wonders in getting the current players to buy in.

I thought there was a lot of coach speak in the middle of the interview, but that's to be expected I guess.

Always cracks me up in live interviews when people mangle metaphors or misuse words. Campbell compared quarterbacking to coaching in that (quoting from memory here), "...every decision is magnetized, every play is magnetized." Presumably he meant magnified.

Not a criticism, we're all human. I just laughed at that one.

Are we still going to run a 3rd and long delayed handoff to our running back?

Reminds me of interviewing a person once who told me they didn't want to leave their local area because they were "geologically bound".

I really like the way that Campbell seems to enjoy his interviews with Williams. Campbell always seems like he can't stand press conferences. But his interviews with Williams are very different.

That’s because they’re usually high.

When staff sticks around, staff continuity is important. When staff turns over, New ideas are important, haha. Good talk!

It was a good interview. I enjoyed Campbell getting into family life a little. I've always been curious who he is away from football, because you see and hear so little of it compared to other coaches. It just sort of makes you assume he's a coaching robot.

Did Campbell talk about what book he/the team is reading this year?

I’ve gotten some of the books he’s talked about in the past and I definitely see where he thinks the way he thinks and uses analogies the way he does. Not sure if he’s read Ego is The Enemy but his saying “you’re either trying to do something or be someone” is from that book. If Campbell is true to his word and isn’t just trying to be someone, he’s going to be at ISU for a long long time

I actually found this to be one of the more frustrating Campbell podcasts. I don’t expect him to throw the prior offensive staff under the bus, but he can just say “I don’t want to speak badly about the prior coaches.” Listening to him you would think they were fired for no good reason at all, and that the guys they hired are doing the same great things. I just wish he’d kill the coach speak and just say he’s not going to talk about it.

Then you should try paying attention to what he actually said, rather than what you expected to hear.

When he literally talks about how well the offense did in ‘20 and ‘21, he is distinctly telling you that he’s NOT “throwing the previous staff under the bus”, just that he felt that changes needed to be made just to mix things up.

He even doubled down on that by talking about how they all landed at good jobs afterwards.

There was no “coach speak” there.

What good would that do other than make you feel better?

He FIRED them. That speaks for itself. I’m guessing that you don’t gain any favors with your coaching staff if they think you’ll talk bad about them on the way out.

I also think he realizes that he’s at fault for s lot of what went wrong.

Did you listen?

He literally talked about different rooms having different cultures and then mentioned S&C.

Interesting that the name of his good friend, Tom Manning, was never mentioned in a 45 minute interview. Or what went into the decision on finally hiring a ST coach.
Thought the ending of the pod talking about the returning players was the best part.

I recorded this with Coach Campbell on Monday.

Enjoyed it so much I listened to it twice
