By this time Saturday night we can be back in a log jam tie for first.

Tonight was brutal. No doubt. There are issues. No doubt. But we are great at home.

Right now Texas and KSU have two losses. Isu and ku and tcu have three. Baylor with four.

If the following results happen see the standings on Saturday night…

Kansas wins tomorrow night at home vs KSU.

Ksu beats Texas Saturday in Manhattan.

Iowa state beats Kansas on Saturday in Ames.

Tcu loses at okie state

Baylor beats Texas tech

Standings would be:

Iowa State 7-3
Kansas State 7-3
Texas 7-3
Kansas 6-4
Tcu 6-4
Baylor 6-4

And we’d have the tiebreaker as number one seed.

Again. We could lose. But it’s crazy that with a win over Kansas we could still be right in it. #EternalOptimist

After tonight I worry about tie break scenarios where we now have 2 losses against the bottom half of the league and so far the other teams near the top do not

I guess I don’t care about tiebreakers really. It’s only for the Big 12 tourney which will be a sh!tshow no matter what. Tiebreakers also take into account how you do against others you’re tied with and there’s such a log jam I’m not sure the tiebreakers will go down as far as losing to the worst teams.

Certainly aren’t out of it, but that’s a game you can’t lose and expect to win the conference. Can’t blow 23-point second half leads against the worst team in the league and expect to finish atop this thing. Only way now is to go unbeaten at home and we are now forced to win at least one of the following: @ Baylor, @ Texas or @ K State

I don’t see this team winning any of those. But again until we can’t mathematically do it, we are still in it.

This thread is really only going to bring you pain. Let the regular season conference title go. Stop thinking about scenarios where ISU can win it.

They won't.

And if--by some unholy deal with the devil that costs us our souls--they do win it, we can all enjoy it.

Just please stop talking like it's a likely thing. Part of what makes the inevitable nut shot hurt so bad is the hope people just won't let go of right before the blow lands.

Go to bed. I never said we are gonna win the title. I said despite tonight we are shockingly still in it. We are gonna end up with ten wins. Maybe 11.

Then why did you make the thread?
Because it’s not the end of the world like some think losing tonight. Despite a horrible game if we win Saturday which is no doubt daunting there’s a good chance we are still tied for first place. Nothing more. Nothing less. Everything I said is factual. Doesn’t mean I think we are title contenders at all.

Maybe "hope" is all you have left at the end of the day...and as long as there is that...maybe a person can sleep at night and know tomorrow is a new day with new hope.
Either that, or he posted it to shut up the baby whiners who believe the sky is ******* falling and he was tired of reading about it.

Not winning the regular season conference title is also not the end of the world. I sleep just fine every year we don't win (which is, of course almost all of them my entire life).

I think a lot of people are less concerned with losing than the manner in which it's happened. It's extremely alarming and isn't a "burn the tape" loss. It's a "oh **** if we don't make some changes this could get ugly" loss.

I'm confident so far that we will see some changes, but I'm thinking those changes keep us from free falling, as opposed to any thought of a conference title.

It was super fun to be in first so late in the season.

But probably best we stop worrying about it now.

Love the optimism, but let's not kid ourselves here. If you're a serious contender you get one clunker like we had against Okie State and Texas Tech. Two clunkers plus remaining road trips to three ranked teams? With the way we go into a shell for huge stretches of games?

Incidentally this is why I hate it when people say things like the Mizzou game didn't matter. Tech was down two starters and figured it out. We were down a starter against Mizzou - yes, with Kunz that makes two starters but we've had a month to adjust to life without him - and we just collapsed. This stuff isn't a light switch you can turn on and off at will.

Really no point in this. This team isn’t good enough to win conference. They’ve still far exceeded my expectations. 10-8 or 11-7 is still a very good year with all things considered.

If they somehow drag themselves to this kind of record despite their deficiencies that would be really good especially after something like last night.

11-7 would be awesome, and in the end you and I have always been the same when it comes to the ultimate goal. And that is get into the tournament healthy and rested then make your run. The lasting impression of any season is: did you make the dance and what did you do there?

People still bring up George Mason’s Final Four run for example. You get hot, which this team is fully capable of, and make the Sweet 16 or beyond and nobody gives a **** what you did in the regular season.

Hell teams (Kansas) win the conference regular season and get bounced early in the dance all of the time. Give me the fun couple of weekends in March when all eyes are on you over anything else. And yes, that includes a regular season Big 12 title, which I would love to see, but if not so be it.

In tiebreaker scenarios it is actually beneficial to lose to the bottom teams. As the scenarios work from record against best to worst.
If you tie. Unfortunately for us, we already have 2 losses against the bottom half, which makes it really difficult to tie.

I think there were plenty of indications before last night what the reality was. People just wanted to hand wave them away for whatever reason. Iowa State will still have a very successful season--especially by preseason definitions of success--they just aren't going to contend for a title. The organization just isn't quite there from top to bottom yet.
