Who has been our best Tight End Coach?

I want to look at our Tight Ends over the years.

We have changed our Tight End coach almost every year, I believe.

We built a few successful years at Tight End, and have had a few really good ones.

I have a few questions for everyone to discuss and what to see what people think.

Who was our best Tight End Coach? Why?

Was our Tight End success, Coaching, Development, Recruiting, or Player?

Have we regressed at Tight End? or Is it just that we lost our great ones and need to rebuild? recruit? redevelop? or changed game plan? or are we still great at Tight End?

This is just a discussion as looking over the coaching staff over the years it seems we have had a number of different coaches at that position, and we have had some success during the Campbell years there and I am interested in who people think have had the most impact on that position, and why.

And if people think we are in a good position moving forward? Whether that be in staff, players, recruits or recruiting?

I am not going to give an opinion up front because I honestly am not sure what I think. I know there is strong feelings on Manning one way or another, that being said he could be a bad OC, but a great position coach, as in when he coached TE or Line. But again, I don't know, I am just seeing what others think.

“Almost every year”? Golesh and Mouser? And Mouser is in his, what, fourth year?

…and Manning was only ever the TE coach for the Colts, iirc. It was OC/OL before he left for there.
Taylor Mauser---2021- Iowa State - Tight Ends
Tom Manning---2020 Iowa State – Offensive Coordinator, Tight Ends
Alex Golesh---2016-2019 - Iowa State - Tight Ends

Um.... 6-7 years 3 TE coaches. So about 2 years per coach average.

Lol. Then Manning was TE coach one year, Golesh and Mouser three each.

You’re reaching…a really, really long way.

And we had a one year hiccup in ‘22 after a couple of extremely seasoned seniors departed—and it wasn’t really all that big of a hiccup.

Stop trying to stir up stuff where there’s nothing to be stirred.

This is a whole lot of nothing to be worried about.
NOT WORRIED! Discussion.. Who was our best coach for TE, who has made the most impact on TE room?
Obviously Golesh had most impact on players like Kolar etc.

It was a discussion question...not a concern.

I have no idea who would be the best, our TE's have been solid for years now.

I mean Golesh left in 2019, and Mauser became TE coach from Quality control coach in 2021, so Manning was TE coach from Golesh departure in 2019 until Mauser was named in 2021. To me that is 2 years, but however you want to add is up to you.

Wow, asking for discussion is trying to stir ****. whatever. Mods just lock this. Christ. What a bunch of ****. Didnt think asking some opinions and not giving a single one of my own was stirring ****.

I asked who has had the most impact and who has been the best,

I guess Mauser being a TE Coach 21-22, and 22-23...some how is 4 years you..

And Golesh 16-17, 17-18, and 18-19. is the rest.

Somehow we didnt have a TE coach from 19-20 and 20-21 Right.. Cuz Manning only did it for 20, not the actual seasons too and between the other named coaches.. Right?

Math checks out.

I'm going to vote Earle Bruce, because I have no idea who may have been responsible for TEs under his reign. He took us to our first two ever bowl games, and put Keith Krepfle into the league, drafted by the Eagles in the 5th round of the 1974 draft. :jimlad:

Second place, Alex Golesh. Pure and simple, he was running that room for the majority of the years that developed Seonbuchner, Soehner, Chase, and Charlie.

Thanks, I appreciate the straight forward answer.

That is what I was asking, a simple discussion, and some opinions. And adding in some past coaches is absolutely fine too. I guess its the offseason I was just looking at the position and was curious who had been the most instrumental at developing that position at Iowa State, how and why, and where people see us at moving forward. The horror.

You know like:

Golesh, did a lot because a, b, c.

Manning didnt because a, b, c.

Mauser has made an impact because a,b,c.

The most overall important impact on the TE room has been coach X because A, B, and C.

We are in great shape at TE, because of this or that, we graduated some stars, but have young guys A, and B looking great, and with a bit more experience at QB etc, they will be awesome too. ETC.

Some of the people on here dont understand what a discussion is, think any question is trying to stir **** up. Not even close to what I was trying to do, and not even close to being worried. It was simply a discussion question on the position and coaching over the years. But some dont understand I guess.

Golesh. The young TE’s were a factor because of his coaching. Very good coach. Mouser is good IMO.

Like most fans, I have no idea.

Were our TE's coaches responsible for signing Kolar and Allen or was that a staff effort? In the case of Kolar, he was an elite TE, but was that coaching development or staff finding a diamond in the rough?

IMO receptions and yards for TE's is more a factor of the QB throwing to them. Some QB's love to throw to their TE's. Others not so much. Dekkers loved throwing to his RB's, far more than Purdy. Was that coaching or the players?

Specific to ISU, I thought Hanika had a nice season for ISU. But I thought the blocking by our TE's and WR's was pretty mediocre. Was that a Mouser thing or player thing- too be determined by 2023.

I am pretty much in the same boat as you.

We had a stacked TE room for a couple years. But I am not sure that was coaches, development, players, luck of the draw, recruiting, QB targets etc., a combination of all of these or one thing in particular, etc.

I agree I thought Hanika had a good year too. My only observation, is it "appeared" we are not as deep in that position as we have been in the past. But that could just be we have some young guys developing, or other things, and the obvious of graduating a few major players there. Everything is cyclical, that doesnt mean we are in trouble at all. Definitely not something I was trying to suggest.

I honestly dont know what was the largest factor in our success there, hence why I asked.

I feel Golesh deserves credit for recruiting and starting the development of those top Tight Ends, Mauser, should get the credit for putting the finishing touches on them, in their best years.

I've been a little curious how much involvement in their development Manning really had, and if he brought some knowledge from the NFL TE coaching days back that helped their development at all.
