Hunter Dekkers Concerns?

I imagine I'll catch flack for this post but wanted to ask anyways. I'm a bit nonplussed by CMC et al. comments on Dekkers. Anyone infer concern about Dekkers putting it all together? I haven't felt a lot of enthusiasm between Blum and Williams, or CMC, which I guess I wanted to see between the lines of coach speak. I feel like I'm used to hearing more buzz and excited optimism around a rising starting QB, especially with his potential. Obviously it's to be expected at this time of year- you have to see it on the field, so we are holding our collective breath. He has all the tools but how quickly can he reach his potential? yada yada.

I wouldn't look to hard into what CMC says or doesn't say.

They were high on Zeb Noland in 18 and that didn't pan out, ultimately have to wait for games to be played.

Last year Dekkers would have probably started if it hadn't been for a 4 year starter in Purdy.

He outshined Purdy all year.

Nope. I've heard way too much hype over the decades about players who turned out to be nothing special. Dekkers might be an all-time great or he might get replaced after week 1, but neither of those outcomes will have anything to do with how hyped the media is about him.

I would imagine at a position like QB, people in the program want to temper expectations for Dekkers He plays the one position where he has a chance to look really good and really bad on every single play. People were pretty tough on our last QB that won a pile of games for us. I'm sure they don't want to give fans a reason to get overly critical on Dekkers if he doesn't throw for 400 yards and 4 TD's in his first start.

He was a stud in high school and I fully believe he will be a stud in college. There will be some bumps along the way. It also seems Rocco is a very serviceable back up. I wouldn’t read too much into the lack of hype train going into his first season as a starter. Just means we have more realistic expectations.

Blum recently posted on this board a quote from a coaching staff member something to the effect of “if he has the kind of season we think he will, the big boys will come calling after the season”. Too lazy to find the thread

Hyping a QB doesn't seem like a great idea to me, anyway. Replacing a multi-year starter is hard enough without hype setting the bar high.

What? Deckers showed flashes but he was not ready to replace Purdy.

We have a few guys that came back unexpectedly that are potential All-Americans. I feel like if those guys would have left and the season narrative was “total reset” we would basically be sick of the HD talk already.

And as always HD’s success level is going to come down to the line. I think it’s just assumed he has the tools, just missing the reps and as always the questions about the line loom over everything.

Was listening to KXNO after work the other day and they said the fact that they didn't bring in a qb from the transfer portal spoke about the confidence they have in Hunter and the backups for that matter.

Yea, you know, I love Campbell, but he's very vanilla in his pressers. His interviews on the pods with CW are much better, but he's still very guarded with his answers. I'm fine with how he handles everything. I just don't take much away from his interviews that sway my optimism/pessimism a great deal.

Something to keep in mind for anytime a head coach does a presser: the message often isn't aimed at the general public. Saban is the master of this; he will field a question from a reporter, but his answer won't be meant to inform the fans. Instead he will be delivering a message to his players, or boosters, or AD, or the NCAA.

Top tier coaches aren't worried about keeping fans in the loop, they are using their pulpit to deliver a message to someone they feel needs to hear it. This is what I often see when Campbell is taking to the media. He is so selective with his words, you have to know that he isn't speaking to the public.

I had the same intuition from his comments when he joined the POD with Brent and CW. Hard to say exactly but seemed like one of those reading between the lines kind of things. Everything else I've seen or read though says otherwise, so I'm hopeful that those comments just came off wrong or whatever. I think he'll be good and really hope he shows his potential this year!

I'm interested in Dekkers, but I think some guys are expecting a John Elway/Tom Brady/Jesus type of performance out of the kid.

I wouldn't sweat the idea that "coach isn't pumping him up so he must not be good".

This staff seems really in tune with players' psyches. I think they know which ones need their confidence or motivation built up, and which ones need "called out", and which ones like being under the radar. It could be they think talking him up puts pressure on him he doesn't need, or it could be he is so confident he doesn't want the attention. Who knows. I trust the staff, though, they are not perfect but they are pretty good.
