SI puts a "value" on the P5 schools

Good ole academics weighing down Bama. I mean, priorities down there, right?

I would guess a lot of people would disagree with ISU football rank at 15 vs Nebby at 45 and BYU at 50.

I think the other sports ranks are goofy too.

To be fair I don't see how academics matters at all in today's college football world. Would actually like to see the list with that metric dropped.

But you could say the same thing about most of the columns here aside from viewership and football success

Football ranking: This is a five-year average of the Sagarin ratings from 2017 to ’21, using only the current and future Power 5 schools

Disagree with what they used if you want, but it's not like they're just eyeballing it

But we are above them, so they're stupid

Interesting. I think there will be some re-shuffling over the next 10-15 years as some SEC and Big Ten programs become perennial losers or mediocre (Look how far Miami has already fallen) since someone has to loose those games. There is opportunity for a couple PAC12 and Big 12 programs to move up if they can win games and become a "powerhouse" in those conferences.

Honestly shocked Iowa State is ranked that high. For the lack of resources we have, our AD is killing it.

Gotta imagine our viewership has taken a hit based on the timeslots and channels we're on vs some of the teams above us. Hopefully, without OuT, we can get a bit higher in the pecking order for the conference.

For anyone wondering about their methodology for setting up the rankings in each category:
  • Football Ranking: 2017-2021 average Sagarin ranking
  • Academic Ranking: US News & World Report's 2021 university ranking
  • All Sports Ranking: 2021-22 Directors cup standings
  • Attendance: reported home game attendance 2017-21 (omit 2020)
  • Viewership: total viewership count of games with 1M+ viewers from 2017-21 (omit 2020)
Looking only at the last 5 years helps ISU due to our football success in that period. If this was a 10-year or 20-year average, I would expect us to be much lower.

Also, I'm curious why they took the 5 year average of category except the Director's Cup standings. Not sure how much that would change, it just seems odd to have that inconsistency.

The exercise is an interesting way to try an put value to the school's ADs.

"The average school ranking for each Power 5 conference, using future membership: SEC 25.1, Big Ten 25.8, ACC 39.6, Pac-12 41.4, Big 12 49.3." The Big12 in last but it'd be interesting to see that after a few years of the new 4 getting more intriguing matchups and better TV accessibility. As UCF, Cincy and Houston were all near the bottom.

There was no Directors Cup in 19-20, so it was probably easier to take 1 year instead of taking a 5-year stretch with a hole in the middle.
