Classic ISU Song Dedication

Listening to Casey Kasem’s American Top Forty from this week in 1980 on KIOA. The current “Long Distance Dedication” is from a guy who had just finished his PhD “in Ames, Iowa”, and was about to leave for his first job as a college professor. It was to his wife. The song was Wildflower, by Skylark, from 1973.

Talked about how it wasn’t really “long distance” since they were “in their little apartment”, but his years in grad school were a ten year journey together. To “Cathy” from “Bill”.

This date seems a little early for finishing the quarter. Graduation was usually in late May. Maybe grad students finished earlier than the rest of us. Honestly don’t remember, and those names don’t ring a bell either.

My experience with a PhD candidate roommate suggests they aren’t necessarily taking classes as they finish their thesis or dissertation. Matter of fact, he finished his degree for Syracuse in Ames because his mentor had moved to the faculty here.

I wasn't a PhD, but I got my masters at ISU. I defended my thesis and completed my masters after I had started my career for a year. I can't remember for sure, but I don't think I was even enrolled at ISU anymore. Wrote my thesis remotely. Definitely isn't the same as an undergraduate track.
