Elvis movie

I just don't know about it. I absolutely LOVE the director. But I am not an Elvis fan at all. Nor do I think the actor looks all that great. I am sure I'll see it, but going in lower expectations and hopefully I am wrong.

I like the director too. Love Elvis. Incredible voice, incredible story. Expectations will be hard to match.

If you've never seen it, watch his first movie of the Red Curtain Trilogy "Strictly Ballroom". The other two are Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge. Strictly Ballroom is super offbeat but it's really really good. (Not trying to overtake this thread, sorry)

I can’t remember how long ago it was, but there was a tv series about his very first years with his original band. It was outstanding.

It might be good although I'm not sure if there will be anything new shown from it.

The trailer I saw didn't seem to make him out to be the bloated mess he was in real life late in his career.

Most of the Elvis mystique came after his death. He’s a lot like the Beatles, people just created what they wanted to see. Elvis was a great performer, but lived a tragic life in the end.

I’ll see it. he was a unique cat and I think this will be entertaining.

Based on another movie I've seen from this director (Moulin Rouge-hated it) and the trailer (no hint of anything new and interesting about Elvis), I'll probably pass on this one. But it may be of interest to others.

Have to disagree with the bolded thought. Both Elvis and the Beatles we two of the biggest recording artists in history up to that point. The mystique comes from the fact that after Elvis's death and the breakup of the Beatles, was over the fact that we would never get to here them perform together again. After the Beatles broke up, there were many rumors about a reunion concert, they played on each others recordings in ones and twos, but never all four of the them together. Elvis played concerts right up until his death, final concert in late June of 1977, and passed away in August of the same year. With the death of Lennon and much like Elvis, everyone knew that we would never hear them together again, that just furthered the mystique that was always there.

Wonder what angle they're taking on Elvis. Huge celebrity but his personal life was pretty sketchy. If he didn't have a pretty voice I doubt anyone would think a womanizing drug addict was anything special.

I'll disagree on the Beatles part for sure. They were definitely pioneers music-wise. Elvis was maybe more showmanship than groundbreaking musically. But both drew from blues artists quite a bit.

The Beatles expanded on their sound so much in just one decade.

Elvis was pretty limited outside of his voice which was powerful and iconic.

He definitely changed things though.

You just summed up most of the music scene and all of Hollywood.

No one would care about Kim Kardashian, she'd just be some chick with a video on pornhub. Or Justin Bieber would just be that scurvy dude you see at the gas station hitting on junior high girls.

I'd want to know how a poor southern boy became such a major, groundbreaking singer (and he was huge; it was no after-death mystique); his upbringing and relationship with his parents (also poor) and some greater exploration of his character and personality, including his decision to go in the Army (can you imagine any major young star today going in the Army?). But you can't do everything in a movie bio.

I expect it will be rather superficial, full of "iconic" visuals, stereotypes of people in his era,, and obligatory sex scenes to titillate the movie buying public.

When was the last really good music biopic? Ray?

I was thinking about that question too, and I can't think of any really good ones. Ray and Johnny Cash were okay. Part of the problem may be that we see actors portraying artists we know too well.

You're right..I don't care about either Justin Bieber or Kim Kardashian. I didn't even know Kardashian made a porn vid..have to check that out.
