AMES, Iowa – Iowa State University is investigating allegations of hazing and other reported concerns related to the Men’s Cyclone Hockey Club.

Based on the serious nature of the allegations, the university has issued an interim suspension of all men’s team activities, effective immediately. This includes team meetings, practice, competition, recruiting and other events. The university’s investigation will focus on team hazing as well as the club’s finances, organizational structure and oversight by Recreation Services.

Cyclone Hockey is a club sport, not associated with ISU Athletics, with three men’s teams. Once the investigation is complete, the university will work with team members on a plan to restructure the club to align with other sport clubs under Recreation Services.

The investigation of Cyclone Hockey is separate and unrelated to the university’s ongoing health and safety review of all sport clubs and proposed recommendations for a sport club policy.

I do not understand hazing and why it continues to happen.
I was in a fraternity in the 1980's and hazing happened. Nothing to terrible, but it happened.
I don't have much interaction with the house today and none with current members. But I occasionally wonder if the things that happened to me, still happen today. My first reaction is of course not- our society has evolved. Then I come back to reality. Of course, it still happens in some form. Kids are kids!!!! When you put 18-22 years in charge of other 18-22 year olds and they live around each other 24/7- stuff will happen.

Used to love going to club hockey games. Haven't been in years. I was young and didn't watch any hockey on TV so I had no idea if they were any good. Just always enjoyed going to games

Big reason why I never sniffed pledging. Seems like one big, literal, circle jerk. And never understood the appeal of that.

Gotta love it. The anti-fraternity crowd comes out in a hockey club article.

I lived in the dorms and a fraternity and had a great experience in both.

I, too, was in a frat back in that era. Though the stigma of hazing is frowned upon, each week we discussed the merits and safety of each hazing exercise. Every one of them had a purpose of strengthening moral, character, comradery and every safety precaution was taken, including repercussions for not following protocol. So, there is at least that.

Wasn't there a story about ISU wanting to ban all of these "dangerous" club sports like Rugby, hockey, basket weaving, etc.? This'll give them an excuse to do so.... little suspicious

I don't feel that is the case as the article mentioned this was separate from health/safety review.

I haven't followed the crew incident aftermath. If there is litigation occurring.

The tragedy was probably an eye opener regarding potential risks of some clubs. As adult supervision can be minimal.

I was in the Marine and Hazing in the Marines was really bad. Like not death bad, I still have scars from being promoted. I have heard it's not near as bad now. I am guessing Hockey players have the same mentality as a lot of Marines. So I am guessing it might have been bad enough for an investigation.
