Mike Gundy on realignment, tv money, and a super conference

My guess is, if this happens, you will see the biggest class action Title 19 lawsuit in our country's history. That's why this is a pipe dream for media and football coaches.

I don’t like our chances in the 30 team thing. OTOH, I think that’s way too few to work. Trying to mirror the NFL will fail.
There’s a world in which not all P5 + ND make the “cut”, sure. That’s 69 schools after B12 expansion. 64 is a nice number that’s easily divisible. So is 60. I don’t think you can go much less than that, but there are definitely a number of programs in the P5 that bring significantly less than others, both with TV potential and fanbase support. Hard to see Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, Washington State, etc. being super valuable in that situation. Many others that have been debated ad nauseam.

Yeah and contrary to what a lot of idiot hok fans think, the b1g would sell them down the river faster than you could say “big ten west” in a 30 team scenario.

I don't really think this is a coherent thought from Gundy as others have pointed out. I don't know why any of these things would happen:

(1) a Top 30 would emerge to separate from the remaining 39 Power Five teams (let alone all of the Group of Five);
(2) the Big 12 would expand to 14, and
(3) this expansion would be good for the strength of Big 12 members in making that Top 30.

Gundy is saying all three of those things but I doubt any of them actually happen.

B1G would either not join such an entity or require them to take all 14 schools. Same with SEC. So that’s your 30 right there.
A thirty team league that covers approx the eastern third of the country. I’m sorry . I don’t see it being viable. Eventually you are going to be splitting money 30 ways and you can’t convince me that the money per team is going to be there and only there.

And still all that added money for the super 30 won't be enough. Texas is a perfect example. The sports illustrated article on their tennis coach just confirms the idiocy going on with money in Austin. It's not just about getting the SEC money for them.

I'm not clear what he was saying in the last 10-15 seconds. If the top 30 teams split off, how is a 14-team Big 12 "in a good situation"? More able to withstand it if a team or two gets poached (unlikely), but on the outside looking in.
Since he concluded with saying he feels there is a good chance "either of those could happen in 2024/25", it seems he's alluding to two possible scnearios...as is in a.) the top-30 separate, of which it was unclear whether he feels good about Ok St making it but acknowledges it's not good for the sport and up to TV, or b.) realignment of the manner in which the Big 12 goes to 14 and is in a good spot.

Although he's spit-balling, likely not too far off, and imo a good chance of both occurring.

The expected revenue differences are not stable. There will be more movement. If major market changes like the Supreme Court ruling on employment, NIL, and/or redoing of CBB tournament revenue distribution occurs, separation is bond to occur. If the fundamentals of college athletics do not change greatly, then the top remaining brands will find their way to the P2, and realignment followed by organic separation will occur.

I agree with Gundy, the Big 12 is in a great spot to be the 3 in P3. Not as much revenue as the P2, but as long as the transfer rule is amended and roster limits still place, not that much more of a disadvantage than most Big 12 programs already had.

If you just sliced off the top 30 in viewership (based on this data which is pre COVID), then OK State would make it in. https://medium.com/run-it-back-with...ams-bring-in-the-most-tv-viewers-efc03c689e50

Iowa State, Kansas State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Mizzou, Louisville, Purdue could be the Midwestern division of a Best of the Rest conference.
Those are 2015-2019. Include 20 and 21, ISU goes WAY up. Those dropping that are ahead of ISU are TCU, and all the PAC teams to start.

Nobody wants a Super SEC Southern League. The reason why is college football is a national sport, it isn't a regional sport.

I despise the SEC's greed for trying their best to ruin the sport. Can't wait to see Oklahoma scrapping and fighting for 5th place in the SEC. They deserve it. And Texas?! Lol, Texas will be lucky to go bowling occasionally in that league.
