Tiller/Cultivator

I’m looking to get my FIL a tiller/cultivator as a gift for helping do some work on our house. Looking to spend probably 300 at the most.

Any suggestions? It just needs be able to till existing garden beds, not break new ones. It also needs to be gas because he’s old school like that.

I have a hard time trusting Google for reviews because I feel like most of the top 10 lists are paid for.

Higher than your price point but I have that one and it works good. Have had it 4 years, have two big gardens that I till pretty regularly, and haven’t had any issues with it at all.

That link didn’t work but it’s an earthquake 2 in 1 front tiller.
 
yep i went with the cheapest electric tiller. i have a small garden and for the 2 times i use it a year. i didnt see needing to get an expensive one.

Mantiss. I have the 4 cycle Honda version. Folks have the 2 cycle version and I think I prefer it. I got the Honda because I thought it easier to start but it can be a SOB. Makes quick work.

electric tools are a great solution for these seasonal chores. no need to worry about gas sitting for 12 months in between uses. no spark plugs, oil, etc...

He’s a semi retired guy that can’t sit still. He has his own garden, my SILs garden and is evidently putting one in our yard this year. It would see a decent amount of use. I bet he takes care of close to 40-50 tomato plants along with a bunch of other stuff. I just don’t see him screwing with batteries and my SILs garden is probably 100 yards from their house so too far for a plug in version.

if hes semi handy. just look on craigslist of used tiller. Im sure there are a few around that just need cleaned up.

I just looked and there were only a few in DSM area and dang they want some money for them. I think Im going to go grab the tiller out of my dads shed that hasnt been used in 10+ years and get it running and sell it.

Another vote for 2cycle Mantis. light, easy to store, tough working machine. I've had one for about five years and works/runs great. When I got mine the kick stand was an added option but should not be. If you go this route and that is still an option get it.

yea may be best to wait until may or june after people use it for the start of the year and then want to get rid of it
 
The little 2-cycle cultivators are okay for weeding. If any amount of tilling is needed, you will be disappointed in them.
 
Have had a 2-cycle Mantis for about 20 years doing light duty work, mostly. It's tough to break sod, but you can work bare ground to break the soil and work in some mulch. But, I see prices are about $380 for 2-cycle to $445 for 4-cycle. See this site for other choices:
