Former wrestling coach Jim Gibbons urges lawmakers to strip Iowa PBS copyright

I still watch to Market to Market, but not much else.

Heck they could release broadcast some of those duals and get decent viewership.

This is going to have a lot of unintended consequences. I read up on it the other day but it seems he’s just not wanting to have to pay. IPTV shouldn’t just be holding stuff back to hold it back but just making it a free for all seems like it would be a disaster.

The participating schools should have free access, since they had to agree to allow IPTV to air the dual(s) in the first place.

Everyone else (general public) should have to pay a fee.

The problem with wrestling people, in general, is that they all want everything for free.

This is no different than any other open records request from the state they way I see it.

My state representative gets it, and I encourage everyone to call their representative and get behind this.

BTW, @buf87 what did you think of the trailer?

I would think there was an agreement/contract in place.
You cannot copyright facts; you can copyright your presentation of them - my own non-lawyer wording.

IPTV only covered a meet if IPTV could own the rights and IPTV didn't accept any money from the school it was covering. The schools got a lot of free promotion for their respective wrestling programs while IPTV simply gave away the television broadcast to anyone with a TV. The entire cost of the coverage and the TV broadcast was paid by IPTV through its Friends group, state appropriation and a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The question is how long is that agreement good for?

IPTV or Iowa PBS if you prefer, will fall on its sword to protect to the rights of the content it produces, or any other program that it purchases for broadcast as shown here in this quote from the executive director:

“If we can’t protect this content with regards to the rights that have been negotiated, then there will be lawsuits — not against Iowa PBS, but against the State of Iowa,” said Molly Phillips, executive director and general manager of Iowa PBS. “Should House Study Bill 579 become law, Iowa PBS would be forced to file a lawsuit to protect our copyright, and this would be a significant amount of money.”

I do agree that if Iowa PBS is forced to file a lawsuit to protect copyrights it would be a significant amount of money, but I'm sure its supporters will help it out. Just do another on-air fundraiser and ask the state to increase the appropriation.

It was pretty neat seeing both Cyclones & Hawks talking about the duals. Dresser & Joe Gibbons was cool

The unintended consequence is that it's going to cause problems for those productions that were done as joint ventures where both IPTV and the other party jointly own the rights. The other party want what they own taken from them and thrown into the public domain.

Just what I needed to lull me to sleep tonight...."It's Daniel Tiger's neighborhood, a land of make-believe, won't you ride along with me? (ride a-loooonng)"

I think it’s stuck in my head for life. But I had to watch that kid for two days when his sister was born and at least it got him to quit trying to stick blocks up my nose.

He better not mess with Daniel Tiger, three year old next door will take him down
My only issue with Daniel Tiger is that I am pretty sure that show originated from Canada. A tiger in Canada?! That's total bullsh*t. Tigers can't live up there.

You're thinking of Paw Patrol. Where the town is run by an inept mayor who can't keep basic city services running, so she's forcing a teenage boy on a 4-wheeler to use his dogs to fix roads, catch criminals, and put out fires.
