For the third straight fiscal year, Missouri’s athletic department finished with a budget deficit, according to documents submitted by the school to the NCAA and obtained by the Missourian. In the 2019 fiscal year, which ran from July 1, 2018, to June 30, 2019, the deficit was $1.79 million.

That is slightly smaller than last year’s deficit of about $1.81 million, which was notably smaller than the $4.56 million deficit the athletic department reported in 2017. After revenue growth last year, though, the school reported a slightly lower revenue stream in fiscal year 2019.

The department’s revenues were $106.6 million, just shy of the $107.3 million reported in fiscal year 2018. That year was the first time the athletic department reported revenues exceeding $100 million.

With the erosion of SECN subs due to cable cord cutting/shaving, the Mizzou benefit from those subs to the SEC is rapidly dwindling. A straight up trade of Mizzou and West Virginia would be beneficial for both schools and conferences.

They probably are happy with the SEC payouts but a big reason they are running AD deficits is due to the numerous empty seats at their FB and BB games, donor/fan/student apathy with SEC competition and irrelevance in a 14-school conference cluster. Their last good basketball run was in the B12 and their best FB teams in the SEC were with B12 recruits.

That could be but it still doesn't mask the fact they have significant FB/MBB attendance issues, lingering apathy for both programs, a loss of long standing rivalry games and irrelevance in the SEC. The only positive thing about their SEC membership has been more TV money.

No one is disputing that. You said those “issues” are a big reason why they’re running a deficit, that’s not true.

A huge appeal to the SEC was their revenue could be maintained, and apparently increase, regardless of attendance. This situation does nothing but confirm they made the right decision financially speaking

The only reason their revenues have increased is SEC TV payouts. Justifying they made the right decision financially (and otherwise) based solely on those increased TV revenues is extremely flawed.

I'm not going to sit here and rip on Mizzu for the choices they made, but I'm also not going to feel sorry for them.

They saw the writing on the wall and if UT and OU had moved to the Pac 12, with the other schools, they were going to be on the outside looking in. So when the SEC offered them the spot opposite aTm, they jumped at the chance. I am sure ISU would have done the same if the slot that went to Nebraska had been offered to ISU in the Big 10.

My complaint about UM is that they did all of this, while saying they wanted to stay in the Big 12, instead of being upfront about it all. The university was begging the Big 10 to take them, throwing themselves at the conference, when they took Nebraska, they again said, "we want to stay and make the Big 12 stronger, all the time talking to the SEC.

Yes they made the right decision in the short term. But in the long term, the fanbase is what gets you the money. A smaller ticket revenue may be able to be made up for by TV revenue, but what about when that explosion of TV revenue goes away? And, how valuable are you going to be to TV execs if you don't have a fan following as the sports world changes from cable subscriptions to ala carte streaming?

Sacrificing fan support for TV money is a short term gain.
