Harold Reid of the Statler Brothers dies at age 80.

For those old enough to remember the Statler Brothers, their bass vocalist, Harold Reid, has died at the age of 80. The Statlers were known for their country and gospel music, 24 years of hit singles (beginning with "Flowers on the Wall"), and comedy. Harold Reid was probably the biggest jokester in the quartet.

Once upon a time, they were guests on the Barbara Mandrell & the Mandrell Sisters variety tv show on NBC. Here's a clip ("How does Dolly do this?"):


The Statler Brothers were one of the first concerts I went to and the first one I specifically asked to go to (I think floor seats were $8). My dad took me. We saw the Statlers and opening act Charly McClain at Hilton in the very early 80s when I was a kid.

I'm a sucker for a good bass voice. He and Richard Sterban (Oak Ridge Boys) are staples of that vocal range. Sorry to hear of his passing.

I'm much more of an Oak Ridge Boys fan than I am of the Statlers but they are a good listen too. Harold added some good comedy to their shows. I still think Richard Sterban is the best bass singer I've ever heard but Harold isnt far behind.

Listened to Roadhog on Beaker Street out of Little Rock back in the day. Came on at 11:00. Thought it was hilarious in a dazed and confused sort of way.

Lew DeWitt passed away in 1990. He left the Statlers and was replaced by Jimmy Fortune in 1982. Hard to believe he's been gone for 30 years.

As a kid my first concert was to see the Statler Brothers at the Clay County Fair in Spencer. I bought my father a Statler Brothers 8 track for Christmas, and he wore it out in our 986 IH tractor.

Harold and his brother had incredible voices.
