***2023-24 Mens College Basketball Thread***

The Big East has three teams that are tourney locks, maybe two more on the bubble.

Why is there a narrative that this is the best conference again?
I didn't know that there was a narrative.

If there is, probably has something to do with UCONN's relative dominance and their status as a slight favorite to repeat as champion.

I'm a bit surprised to see Maryland in there as well.

Were they supposed to struggle this season? Or are they underachieving compared to pre-season expectations?
Maryland I think is an example of how metrics can be misleading. I watch quite a few of their games (am a UMD employee). They are #161 Adjusted Offense and #6 Adjusted Defense on kenpom. Maybe it's just my eyeball test that's off but those #s should be reversed. They have three good-to-very-good offensive players in Young, Reese, and Scott. Their games are low-scoring because they try to force a slow pace but I don't think they're a good defensive team.

They are under-achieving I think, they were expected to be pretty good this year with that Big Three I mentioned above all back from a team that went 22-13 (11-9) and won a tourney game. Being in 11th place in the Big 10 in late Feb is definitely a disappointment.

What is Purdue going to dot today? they are starting at 1pm CT on Sunday instead of 12. Probably going to go into their nap time.

Could Pitino look anything more like a mob boss?
I'm trying to cheer for the Johnnies today since Creighton losing is good for ISU (although I guess they can't be seeded in Omaha anyway), but cheering for a Pitino team is pretty tough.

The east coast bias is really strong in college basketball. A lot of the media is from the east coast and grew up watching the Big East. There is a lot of pride and nostalgia, and they're tired of hearing about the Big 12 again.

You'll hear a lot of east coast media members pushing that the BIg East, at the very least, is the most competitive conference. If it's not that, then it's the most interesting conference. Some before the season were touting it as the best. Anything other than talking about those flyover schools...
