***Official 2023 Chicago Cubs Thread***

Great deal for both sides. Deal puts us about $10 MM shy of CBT, which is right where the FO likes to sit. My guess is there will be no more moves but it’s entirely possible they go through tier 1 and 2.

Wouldn’t hate getting a deal done with Montgomery or Chapman and then going into the season with a billion trade chips.

Most recently they've targeted the best fit and recruited them. Suzuki, Stroman, Swanson and now hopefully Imanaga. With all the young OF talent plus Happ and Suzuki tied up through 2026 Bellinger isn't exactly a perfect fit.

I'm going to say a name that many here despise but Wisdom makes a nice platoon at first with Bush. Morel is going to drive in a lot of runs if he can play a decent third. PCA/Canario could cause a lot of damage. Shaw many be pushing for time soon and Hoerner has apparently added some pop over the winter. Any of these that fail can be dealt with at the deadline. We have the prospects.
I knew if I accepted not needing him he'd sign.

Offseason strengths so far:

1) Return the same offense as last year, which finished 3rd in the NL in runs scores. Only roster losses are guys who had negative WARs

2) Bullpen is much improved

Offseason questions remaining to be answered:

1) Is our starting pitching definitively better - we are relying on a repeat from Steele, and Imanaga to be the middle ground of Stroman's Cy Young first half and atrocious second half

All of that said, I think my final offseason request is a SP.

Good deal for the Cubs. This is a Carlos Correa type deal like he signed then opted out of after year 1 to sign his current deal. Gives both him and the Cubs some short term protection. I was never keen on giving him a 5-7 yesr deal with all the prospects in the system. He helps immediately and allows the Cubs more time to develop and evaluate some guys that don't necessarily need to make the opening day roster now.

This organization has a ton of talent and flexibility right now. Just so many things they can do based on which players emerge.

The 40 man move will be interesting. Do they DFA someone or is there a small trade coming. Tauchman's role becomes diminished now and he would probably be the odd man out now whenever they bring PCA up. Peralta and Smith definitely not making the opening day roster now.

Agreed. Glad the front office stayed disciplined and didn’t listen to the fans screaming for more moves. This gives them max flexibility instead of potentially locking them into another Jason Hayward type of long term deal.

Tauchman make sense as a trade. Masterbouni seems like the DFA candidate.

I'm hoping we see a trade before a DFA. Agree on the Master being the likely DFA, but feels like he has a role on this team.

Get rid of Mervis, Canario, and Tauchman, all of them have better value for other organizations than us, so get something for them.

It's not an amazing deal for the Cubs because there likely won't be a ton of upside potential for the contract given that he'd opt out with another strong year. They did limit the downside by not guaranteeing 7 years so that's good. Fair deal for a player the Cubs absolutely needed if they really want to try to compete.

With Bush the likely regular at first McGeary being right handed seems like a better bench fit then Mervis. Be nice to get one of those competitive advantage end of the first round picks for him.

Both guys made decent contributions last year, but feel like they were Ross' guys. I anticipate Counsell will go a different direction. Also feel like Wisdom is going to need to have a big spring training to stay on the roster.

There is a lot of focus on Busch being the Cubs regular 1B, which would be great. But most of his minor league experience since 2021 has been at 2B or 3B, so he can play those positions as a utility guy.

So unless Wisdom, Masterbuoni or Tauchman have a big spring training- I think the Cubs will move-on to prospects or Peralta/Smith/Bote,

I'm not sure why people don't want to give Canario plenty of room to show his stuff. Dude was an absolute MONSTER in '22, and then he got hurt in winter ball. This is his first full season back at full strength. He's a complete ballplayer and could potentially blow up as a real star, no way am I trading him. Let him play EVERY DAY for now at AAA along with PCA, and then access where things stand come mid-season.

Mervis and Tauchmann, yeah, they need to be moved. I like Mervis, I've seen him multiple times in Des Moines, but he's at best 4th on the Cubs' depth chart for 1B at this point. Do him a favor and trade him to an organization where he can get a real shot.

I thinks it’s pretty close to the deal Hoyer and Hawkins wanted all along. They didn’t like a long term deal partly because of the potential of PCA and Busch. I think they feel like if Belli kills it to the point that he opts out after this year that they’ll be better positioned to acquire power next offseason. 30 million is a lot but they couldn’t go into this year without another proven bat.

I don't get it either, seems like a lot of upside with Canario and he has a lot of power too. Some here want to see Davis get a shot and he's been more hurt and less productive than Canario. I want to see what both are capable of and possibly use 1 in a deal at the trade deadline if we still need pitching. I think we have depth at SP but there are a lot of questions about the quality and consistency. Got several guys that could be solid 3-5 guys in the rotation but compared to other top teams they still lack the quality of guys at the front end. If Steele can replicate his season last year and Shota is the real deal then that helps but still a lot of questions with what Taillon and Hendricks will give you and who will fill that last spot.

I really like him too but I will say I've seen too many errors out of him on routine plays in Des Moines.

But it's easy to see why with 3 top 100 OF prospects plus Davis a former #1 prospect in the system only a couple years ago.

It’s not that I want to see Canario go, but there are only 4 spots on the field for him, and it seems all 4 seem pretty much taken care of, unless Morel does hold down 3B and Canario becomes our DH.

Suzuki, Happ, PCA, and Belli are locks for spots. The question is do the cubs want to keep him as their 5th outfielder this year or take what he’s valued at now and trade him to a team that might value him as a starter
