Tough day for EIU hoops hopes

Is Fran pulling a Costanza and trying to get fired?

I’m not sure anyone can do anything with Iowa basketball in this era. Iowa has made it clear they are spending their NIL in football. That’s why no good transfers will give them the time of day. That’s not Frans fault to be honest. The next coach is walking into no support from NIL. It seems with schools like Iowa state and Iowa that you have to pick a sport and hope for the best in the other sport. The rich schools can afford both sports for NIL
Then why wasn’t Fran getting top recruits before NIL? I think that’s just a convenient excuse for Hok fans that all of their NIL money goes to football. Hok fans say that’s how we get good players is because we‘ e always paid them and we know that’s just not true

I have to think Iowa uses the unlimited tv money in 2025 to buy out the rest of Fran’s contract after next season. They’ve waisted an entire generation of mbb fandom on the guy.
Can they wait that long? I get his buyout is (relatively) massive right now, but their situation right now is grim.

If I'm a coach they interview to replace Fran, if they don't try to find the money to fire him after this year I would question if they ever would have the money to support basketball like you would need to be successful.

Does Devries have strong ties to Iowa including being an assistant coach there?

Pretty sure TJ wanted the job in 2015 when things were going very well for ISU.
Not as strong as TJ but I'd be surprised if he said no

Question for the Iowa fans- what do you think would get fans more interested in the men’s basketball program? Is it as simple as moving on from Fran?

I don't know why money would be a barrier at this point for Iowa.

I thought the Big Ten had a money printer in the back somewhere.

Well minus this season they have constantly made the tournament. I think you are seeing the drop off in talent with their recruiting. They look like a mid major. They used to actual look legit with the Murray’s, Garza and a few others like Tyler cook

But it was always fools gold. They struck it fairly good with guys from Iowa or with direct ties to Iowa. None of that was because of Fran. And when push came to shove, those “good” teams folded like a chair every single time.

True but they always had enough talent to make the show. Also Garza was a good recruit. Now they have nothing

If I were Iowa I'd go after someone like Dayton's Grant. He's done really well there. COVID year sucked as they were 29-2 but no tourney played. Maybe he's waiting for a bigger gig though.

Why would Devries leave a winning program like drake and inherit that dumpster fire at Iowa, I know your looking at more $$ than he is earning now but is the heartache worth it.
I have no idea what Devries is thinking about it…or even if he is.

Same reason TJ wanted to take over a 2-22 team. Iowa and Iowa State are better jobs, more opportunities, more money. Drake will probably go something like 26-8 this year and play in the NIT
And you could play in the Big Ten where they normally take about seven mediocre teams.

They had one team in 2018-19 that at least won a tourney game and then pushed 2 seed Tennessee to OT but they were still a 10 seed for a reason.

Otherwise they've been a fake tough guy house of cards for his entire tenure and Alford's tenure was kind of similar without all of the antagonizing.

It's always funny when the Hok fans on here talk about missing the 'toughness' of Connor when he's a prime example of fake tough guy who sucked at basketball and couldn't guard a shopping cart.
