Tough day for EIU hoops hopes

He reloaded nicely this year and only has one guy that can't return next year. Not to mention the 4 star he has redshirting due to an injury his senior year.
Overton and Wright were really good gets this offseason.

If Deveries was hired this offseason I think there's a good chance Tucker would come with him for his last year. That would accelerate the rebuild. If goetz looked for more qualified candidates I'd be ok with it but Deveries is a really good fallback. I don't think there's another mid major coach that makes more sense.

Devries would make sense and I dont know why he would turn it down if offerred.

i really hope they hire devries. that fanbase has already built him up to be some sort of savior and he will start with some very unrealistic expectations, this sets up for the fanbase to sour on him really quickly when they arent an instant success.

the main reason he has won at drake is because he has a couple of high major players on a mid major roster. i am not sure high major transfers will be lining up to come play for him at iowa. at the very least he will have to be winning games against other teams that are equally talented and he hasnt really shown he can do that yet.

I don't know if that is true. I think there are some people that really like him but from what I have read there is also a lot of skepticism about him.
I don't agree with the second sentiment either.

This thread has been crashing along for a while and I admit it got lost in the shuffle for me. I have a question, though -

From the last 2-3 pages it sounds like people believe Fran will be gone in short order. Have I missed something?

He’s better off staying at Drake until Creighton opens up anyway.

He doesn’t have to wait for Creighton necessarily. There are always good jobs that open up every year. Ohio St would be one that’s probably going to open up. They may push for huge splash hire though.

He looks disinterested on the sidelines and Beth might want to get her own coach in there.

There’s a lot of talk he’s pretty much the coach-in-waiting for Creighton. He also might want to research the current NIL setup in Iowa City.

Ya I have heard that but does he want to wait that long? Now I dont know how old Greg is.

There's a bit of tea leaf reading.
Iowa is not having a good season, and is almost assuredly not making the tournament. Attendance is terrible. Fran's youngest has announced that he's not going to play at Iowa. A lot of the fan base is not happy with the current staff. There's a new AD in town, so it would seem like a coaching change could be coming.

BUT, Fran's contract goes out a few years still. And he's the winningest coach in the history of the program, and has made the tournament a lot recently.

I think fans and probably the AD, would like to see him step down. It certainly would be a lot cheaper for the school. But does Fran want to do that? Could/would they fire him? Can they afford not to?

Attendance reports of under 10k and actual seats filled of like 5k. Students don’t even go.

He has already failed at at a football first conference and has a really sweet gig in Omaha and all the resources he needs.

I could see them hiring Will Wade

EIU is not going to be able to get a more qualified coach to come there than the Drake coach. This is not football and there are few coaches with talent thinking "I always wanted to coach at EIU. Look at where everyone of the preceding coaches came from, none were D1 coaches, always successful coaches from the lower rank that tend to be in their 30's. They are hoping to catch a person that is young, will be successful and stay there for 20 years.
