49ers - Brock Purdy - Still and Always #1

Forget Ting. Lombardi is great. I love his takes. It's more the likes of Nick WRONG and Steven Ruiz types. The real idiot sports Hot Takes guys. Nothing wrong with Lombardi or his takes. He's more right than most of them.

I don’t care if they criticize Purdy but they never give any praise. When the narrative is “Niners win despite Purdy”, it is absolutely no win situation for Purdy.

* Win the Super Bowl. Purdy was just along for the ride. He got carried there.
* Lose at any point in the playoffs. It's Brock Purdy's fault. Any other QB could win the Super Bowl with this.

It's a LOSE, LOSE situation. Set up that way on purpose. Because they already made up their minds. Results on the field don't matter. Just the narrative they want to stick to. They want to force it into being. No matter what happens.

There will be no criticism for Jackson even if he loses on Sunday. No criticism for choking twice as #1 overall seed?

Josh Allen doesn't win much in the playoffs. No criticism at all. Greatest player ever.

Brock Purdy is 3 - 1 in the playoffs. 3 - 0 in games where he didn't tear his elbow and require surgery. He never lost a playoff game where he didn't tear his elbow. Yet it's all just criticism. If you listen to the Hot Takes shows the win last week to advance to the NFC Championship game was a loss. Win = Loss. Loss = catastrophe should he do it.

Allen is 5-5 in the playoffs. When Purdy wad playing well, they said he is not a good QB because he can’t win from behind. He finally brought his team from behind and now he is receiving criticism for putting his team in that position

Maybe they were talking about recent years or something. I don't know. I heard that on a podcast somewhere. So I guess that was wrong and not the totality of it. But anyway. Still not very good for all the hype he gets.

Yes to your argument. Playing ahead = not a good QB because he can't come from behind. Come from behind win = Loss. Because you should not be in that position in the first place. You should not put your team in that position. It's a ridiculous argument and take IMO.

Haters are becoming more creative. Marshall Faulk during Rich Eisen show said Brock lost it he got lucky on the throw to Jennings on the final drive. He said ball got away from Purdy and perfectly landed between LB and safety. He also said Shanahan helped Purdy on the winning drive. I guess Shanahan threw passes to Jennings, Conley, Aiyuk, and Kittle. Shanahan also scrambled for 9 yards.

No matter what Purdy does, the haters won’t change what they think of him. You can’t convince people who think Purdy can’t do anything right. If Niners win the Super Bowl, they won despite Purdy. If Niners lose, it is all because of Purdy.
Biggest problem is there are a lot of people who make good money to figure out who is going to be good and why…and they were all wrong.

He didn't get lucky. He led the game winning drive. It was a driving rainstorm. He was 6/7 on the final drive with one George Kittle drop. Plus a good scramble. He made most of the yards on that drive. Jordan Love played bad in the rain too. But you hear nothing of it. It's Jordan Love is the next big thing at QB in the NFL. Brock Purdy choked. Winning = Losing. Losing = Winning.

Just completely crazy. They don't do this to anybody else.

I think someone earlier in the thread nailed it.

If you're physically gifted and drafted for that reason, you're anointed as the best immediately. In large part because your talent is easy to see.

If you're mentally gifted and drafted for that reason, you're lucky to have been drafted and have to prove it before you get any credit. Your success is credited to those around you until its completely obvious that you deserve any credit.

Tom Brady is probably the best comparison as far as the early career distrust.

Funny enough I used to think of Tom Brady as a product of the system. He had a great defense backing him up holding down the other team. He had coach Bill Belichick. His kicker would make the last second FG and they would barely win in the Super Bowl. It was 2 - 3 Super Bowl wins in before I recognized it. Same with others too.

I guess I can sort of see how it can happen. But it's just so frustrating with Brock. Because if you watch the full 17 games and the full 1.5 years you see it definitely. Much more than a game manager. I think a lot just saw the Ravens game because everyone is off at Christmas. Plus the draft status. In addition to being not the biggest stature Super Hero looking guy. It's just all of that stuff. Processing, decision making and accuracy don't always show up the way a rocket arm or fast running speed like Lamar do. Those show on highlights. Brock is 90% the mental aspect of the game. That's what makes him great. Hard to show that on tape and highlights. Which is why people think he is ordinary. But they are wrong. The whole thing is just so frustrating.

I don't know what it will take?

Winning, just like anyone else, Brock hasn't even finished his first full year as a starter yet.

Lots of people had questions about Mahomes before and after draft day, winning is what changes peoples' minds.

Mahomes was considered like a shaky pick and that they wasted too many picks trading up to that spot. Which looks ridiculous now. Brady believe it not was considered a game manager on a great team that was carrying him. For the first 2 - 3 Super Bowls. Eventually he went to so many AFC Championships and Super Bowls and won so many that questioning it would be ridiculous. You just got to play it out. Hopefully he can win 1 or a few. We will see. They have a good chance this year. But no guarantees. Should they get there the Super Bowl game will be extremely difficult against either team.

IF we get to the SB, one thing we can be sure of. Homefield advantage, in a BIG way.
Attended the Niner's-raiders game.
Embarrassing for the raiders. Rough guess, 70% Niner's fans....talk about fun!

Josh Allen is probably the wrong example to be using here. Yeah, I get his playoff record isn't great, and yeah, I get that most QBs get all the credit and blame when things go wrong - but in most of those losses he's not the problem. His postseason stats are of the caliber that most WINNING playoff QBs would kill for - outside of the record. When it comes to Allen, the Bills' defense and this year its special teams have let him down.
