Dad Sayings - Words of Wisdom

Dad, and his dad too:
"what you think don't amount to a damn, its what you know that counts" (if you said "I think...")
"I'd rather be a smart ass than a dumb ass" (this should be our family crest)

will update as I think of more...

When it came to working for someone else and crappy jobs. "Don't let them know you know how to do it, or they will expect you to do it everytime".

(3) things he would say routinely. They have carried over to my words of wisdom to my kids.

1) Remember where you came from
2) Just calm down, you can't think with the blood pumping that fast
3) Don't ever ever fight. But if you do, you better lay them down so they cant get back up because you may not want to know what'll happen next.

My parents always said

“You may not know everyone around you, but there’s a chance someone knows who you are”

“It’s not always what you know but who you know”

Advice my husband gave our sons “Watch for ice on bridges” It started out as beginner cold weather driving advice and became fun words of wisdom, even during the summer.

A couple I've picked up that weren't from a family member:

"Don't tell me what you've heard, tell me what you think." (i.e. form your own opinions)
"Don't ever trust a grown man with a nickname."
"Never burn a bridge unless you need the light."
Similar to that one "People who constantly burn bridges eventually end up on alone on an island."

My adult daughter and her fiance were having trouble with getting a car started last night so they called for advice. While they were on FaceTime I was trying to educate them on what to look for. Out of nowhere I spewed out one of the things my dad always said, "An engine needs two things to start: gas and spark. If it's not starting it's one of those two things." It was one of those two things and it's running fine now. But it got me thinking about what other things I need to be sharing with my kids.

What are the pieces of "wisdom" your dad bestowed on you that you find yourself saying aloud?

Somewhat related.

If it's got tits or wheels you're gonna have trouble with it.

Pops wasn't what you'd call a refined gentleman

When starting to drive a car, I had no idea how to drive an automatic since I grew up on a farm and everything I drove was a manual transmission. I was using my left foot to brake and my dad told me, "you use your left foot again to brake, I will cut if off!" I learned quickly.

Rather than "drive safely" it was always "Watch out for the other guy". So much so that some guy brought it up in a eulogy at my dad's funeral.

My sister didn't initially pass it on. Heard her tell middle daughter to "...and drive safely". Response was, complete with roll of the eyes, "Thanks, Mom, I was planning to drive recklessly but I'll be careful now".
