*** Official #2 Houston vs IOWA STATE Game(Day) Thread ***

As horrible as Kelvin Sampson was during his post game presser, he does a great job on this preview presser for their game against TCU. He has A LOT of great things to say about Iowa State.

Much more what you would have expected in the post game presser..I think he was just pissed off and a bit shocked after the game. Glad to see him give us some credit.

No what is insane is people that think we can continue to play with the defensive intensity we played with the other night, hit 3/15 from 3 point land and still come out with a victory. Then throw in the fact that half those games will be on the road.

The victory against Houston was great, we were also at home, playing the number 2 team in the nation, on national TV and our kids were up for the game. No team can continue getting up game after game, KU proved that the next night losing their first conference game.

I think people are just really happy that ISU broke through and finished off a good team and are hoping they can keep it together enough through league play to get a tourney bid.

Nobody is just saying that kind of shooting is going to work every night out.

There will be good games, bad and somewhere in between.

Sports are weird.

get ready to complain about the next game.
Can't wait!

It's been repeated ad-nauseum but this was just such a big win. I was looking down our conference schedule a couple weeks ago and man it's rough:

@ OU
vs. Houston
vs. OSU
@ BYU
@ TCU
vs. KSU
vs. KU
@ Baylor
@ Texas

You could realistically play pretty good in all those games and end up 1-8 or 2-7 halfway through the conference season. That could still happen but there's just a lot less pressure now especially if we pick up a win on Saturday.

JFC people, iSU played a less than perfect game against a top 5 team and won! Appreciate it and get ready to complain about the next game.
Agree! We just beat the best defense in the nation and quite possibly the best team in the nation. Jeez.

And those who've been ******** about our soft schedule can stop complaining, too. ISUs schedule for the remainder of the season has been rated the most difficult in the nation.

TJ built the schedule knowing he had one of the youngest teams in the country competing in the toughest conference in the country. Dude knows what he's doing.

That was a great win last night, no doubt, but I do think Houston is WAY overrated. They haven't beaten anyone this year at all. Haven't beaten a ranked team yet.

As Fran said last night... Sampson told him that their offense starts as soon as someone throws a shot up on the rim on their team. So basically... someone throw a shot up, and then everyone else just crash the boards and knock down anyway in your way! And hopefully you get a tip in or a putback. That is their offense. That isn't going to work against all these great Big 12 teams I don't think.

I do think they are a decent team, probably top 15 or 20, but not #2.

As I said... it was a great win... but they are going to have at least a handful of losses this season IMO.
I think the top five teams in the country are likely to have a handful of losses each this year, thus not necessarily knocking them off that perch.

Pretty confident Houston would beat Purdue 9 times out of 10 as Purdue is seven feet four inches away from being an average team.

And for the other end of the spectrum, here's Self after his team lost on the road to the team picked to finish last in the league (he's very complementary of UCF):

Self is always great in post game pressers. You can tell even though he runs the best program in the sport, he has a great understanding of the ups and downs that come with playing in the Big 12. Last year's postgame after we blew them out in Hilton was a perfect blend of entertaining and informative.

Once we get past our 5th game, we will have one of the easier remaining schedules in the conference. Starting 3-2 would make me very optimistic.

Our final 9 games are significantly easier than our first 9. Other than @ Houston is mixed in the back half lol

I'll never understand the obsession on this board with opposing coaches talking us up after we beat them. That need for validation just comes off as very small and insecure.

Sure, it would help me to feel more confident in the quality of our team for someone like Sampson or Self to give an honest assessment that says we are pretty good. But I have no way of knowing if what they say in these press conferences is their true feeling or just polite coach speak so I put zero value in it.

Well I guess I'm just smaller and more insecure than you are. Forgive me for enjoying listening to opposing coaches give praise to my favorite team. I'll try to do better in the future.

In fairness, I’m not sure people are looking for validation as much as they’re noting what douche bags some coaches are. Sampson was just an a$$hole in his post game.

4-5 in that first 9 games would be a win. That’s absolutely brutal. We have to take care of business at home against OSU and KSU then find a way to pick up one more. I’m thinking KU at home or @TCU or @BYU.

I've only watched a couple of Purdue's games, but that would be an interesting matchup. Purdue rebounds well and have several players that can shoot from distance, but overall aren't as athletic as what I saw from Houston. Would be an interesting game, especially if the refs let it play out as physically as they did in the ISU Houston game. I was impressed with how athletic the Houston team was and they will go far, especially if they shoot from distance better than they did against ISU and if they take better care of the ball.

Purdue's guards would get eaten alive in the game and that's been their problem for a few years now when playing very athletic teams.
