49ers - Brock Purdy - Still and Always #1

Any indication how much the starters will play this weekend? First half or not at all?

I'm concerned about the right side of the OL, have been for some time. Justified?
Yes you should be. It's the worst side of the offensive line. That's where the problems come from.

LT - Trent Williams - 6'5" 320 lbs. The best LT in the game and the best offensive linemen for the 49ers.
LG - Aaron Banks - 6'5" 6'5" 325 lbs. Notre Dame 2nd round pick. 2nd best offensive linemen for 49ers.
C - Jake Brendel - 6'4" 299 lbs. Average to so, so. You can get beat here.
RG - Spencer Burford - 6'4" 300 lbs. Average and sometimes a problem. Athletic but undersized. Can get beat.
RT - Colton McKivitz - 6'6" 301 lbs. Can get beat pass blocking. Not a strong run blocker. Sometimes will have decent footwork and pass block with reasonable effectiveness. Hit and miss.

The problems come from the right. Other teams know this too. It's how Hassan Reddick blew up Purdy's elbow last year. From the right side. Also they don't run block as effectively there. If they need yards they run CMC left. Especially by the goal line. Because behind the LT and LG you have a much better chance to get it.

Key backup - John Feliciano - 6'4" 325 lbs. A veteran guy who has been around the league. With the Bills an Giants. He has been a starter. He can fill both Guard positions and the Center position. He does with injuries and he's pretty solid IMO. You probably have heard the name.

They have to play some. Just to get past the game. 53 man roster and 48 active on game day. You have no choice to play some. But they will rest injured guys and pull as many starters as they can as soon as they can. I could live with just run almost every play, run clock, punt, play defense with backups and run out the game.

Will OL right side be the major area for action in trades and the draft? Where else will management focus? Thanks.

I've been saying for years they need to draft offensive line early and get some free agents. But they always draft defensive line, pass rushers, and RB's. They mostly neglect the offensive line. They are obsessed with defensive line and it is good when healthy. But I would like to see some focus on offensive line now. The Eagles, Cowboys and Lions have much better offensive lines with top tier guys. Ours is sub par outside of Trent Williams who is great and Aaron Banks (2nd round Guard - Notre Dame a few years back).

Didn't they trade last years starter to make room for the current right tackle who was supposed to be better? Also from ND

It better be.
Wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the case but they may also need to replace Aiyuk as there’s been talk that he’ll end up somewhere else. Trent Williams is a stud and Fred Warner is a stud and he’ll even kittle is having a hell of a year but at some point they’re either going to retire or the 49ers will move off of them as they’re too expensive for their production.

They let the past RT Mike McGlinchey go to Denver in free agency. Because it was a huge contract they didn't want to match. He plays with Russell Wilson now. Never was a great pass blocker. But OK. He was a bulldozer in the run blocking game though. You are right he was from Notre Dame and a 1st round pick. Who never quite lived up to that. But he's huge. 6'8" 315 lbs. He was an excellent run blocker. Very powerful.

Colton McKivitz who was on the roster replaced him at RT for the 49ers after he left. He was a 5th round pick. Not as highly touted. 6'6" 301 lbs. They both can have struggles in pass blocking. Run blocking was better with McGlinchey. McKivitz (current RT) went to West Virginia. At times he is a decent technician with footwork and can pass block. At times he can get beat with power or speed. He doesn't give you as much run blocking.

As a Denver fan, McGlinchey has gotten a ton of pre-snap penalties which has earned him the nickname McFlinchey. He hasn’t been terrible, but hasn’t been well received. Probably good the 9ers shed that contract.
