Things to do in Memphis

Interesting, I think BBQ is all subjective. I liked Kue'd but thought Cornbread was ok and never been a huge fan of smokey D's.

Please, do us a favor and keep this thread as a conversation about Memphis BBQ. I'm hoping that it can be a go-to thread for folks going to Memphis. There are plenty of other threads that are more generally about BBQ.

Go to the Civil Rights Museum. It's one of the best museums in the country.

Near by is the greatest dive bar in the country, maybe the world. Ernestine & Hazel's. The 1st floor bar and griddle, and the 2nd floor bar are both awesome. And the building is incredible and has amazing history.

Gibson Donuts, Central Barbecue, Beale Street are all things that should be experienced if you're in Memphis and haven't been to them before.

I will start with a super high recommendation for the National Civil Rights Museum. It is on the actual location of the Lorraine Motel where Martin Luther King Jr. was killed.

There is so much to see in the museum, including the Rosa Parks bus.

Also, we have arranged for the Ames History Museum travelling exhibit called "Jack Trice: Tower of Strength" to be on temporary exhibit next week in the NCRM.

Looks like we will also be able to display a few photos, images, and a notebook of articles by Kagavi and others about Jack Trice in addition to the Ames History Museum "Tower of Strength" display at the National Civil Rights Museum.

Please be safe, y'all. Memphis consistently ranks in the top 5 for most dangerous cities. Stay on the beaten paths and you should be fine. But, keep your head on a swivel.

We're staying at the Hilton Garden Inn on Union Av, just down from the Peabody downtown. We're arriving early afternoon on Thursday, so I'm guessing with as many ISU fans that will be there it won't be hard to stay with the large groups as we walk to and from Beale. We don't plan on wandering outside of Beale since we'll have limited time.

Thinking about one of the music museums. Anyone have thoughts on Sun Records, vs Music Hall of Fame vs Rock 'n Soul Museum?

Sun Studios is really good. It's a pretty quick stop though. Maybe 30-45 minutes?

Has Graceland been mentioned? I've not been there, but I've heard that there is quite a bit to see there.

We toured it at the ISU/Tulsa Liberty Bowl. It was pretty cool, especially the recording studio and the museum.

What about the huge pyramid Bass Pro Shop. Never been to it, but it looks pretty cool. It is just a little north of where I'm staying.

We went last time. It is basically a large bass pro in a really cool building. They had tours to the top of the pyramid, but we didn’t do it.

There's an elevator to a balcony near the top of the pyramid. $8 to go up unles your staying at the pyramid, then its free. It's the tallest free standing elevator in the u.s.

Also, bowling alley and a few restaurants including one at the top of the pyramid.

How about blues clubs?

Trip Advisor mostly gave places on Beale Street.

WeAreMemphis gave some places that seem more authentic and less touristy.

May have to try some of these places after the bowl games are done on TV.

Now I know where to find @ChrisMWilliams.

America’s most haunted bar is also a great place to catch some live blues on the weekends (if you aren’t too scared, that is). This Memphis institution has been hosting live music since at least the 1950s and remains a local favorite for late night dancing, drinking, and revelry. If you happen to stumble upon E&H on a weeknight when there isn’t a band playing, don’t fret. They have one of the city’s best jukeboxes filled with local blues heroes like B.B. King, Bobby “Blue” Bland, John Lee Hooker, and many more.
