49ers - Brock Purdy - Still and Always #1

It has now moved on to Brock vs. Lamar.

Todd McShay was on the Ryen Russillo podcast on Monday and said “if you put Brock Purdy on the Patriots they would still be terrible but if you put Lamar on the Patriots they’d be a playoff team.”

Based on…..?

Based on talking heads need to talk about something.

I honestly think there isn't that much controversy about Brock and the MVP, it's more or less just something they can use to fill time between commercials until the playoffs start.

This nonsense about the strength of the 9ers supporting cast discrediting Purdy for MVP is such an insane double standard.

Look at Mahomes in KC this year. He is widely regarded as one of the best to ever play the position. But this year he has a crappy receiver group and some issues on the o line. And as a result, he has put up more mediocre numbers. Nobody wrote him off in his prior MVP years because he was throwing to Tyreek and Kelce in his prime and playing for an offensive genius coach in Andy.

Flip it around with the Jets. Coming in to the season everyone thought they were a contender. Rodgers goes down and they aren't even a playoff team. Doesn't matter how good the rest of the roster is if you have no QB.

Elite teams need QB play, talent around the rest of the roster, and good coaching. MVPs end up being selected from the top teams. Why is that standard any different here?
It's cause Brock is a more boring player. Not that he's making lesser plays, quite the opposite. He's on time and makes great throws look routine and boring. If he was flushing the pocket and trucking guys or making side armed highly athletic plays while taking contact, I'm sure they'd be slobbering all over him.

He should win but I think people want their MVP to be making crazy athletic plays like Tyreek Hill or Lamar Jackson rather than someone who is intelligent and makes good throws from the pocket. If he wins a ring, this will all go away a la Brady.

Some people think only mobile QB's are quality QB's. They want to ignore actual stats. They think a QB who has to scramble and improvise is somehow better than a QB who knows how to read a defense and throws the ball on time and in stride.

Todd McSh*t is an NFL draft analyst, any success that Purdy has is a direct repudiation of his analysis As an NFL analyst. His opinion is irrelevant on this matter.

I think he's fine to watch but he's not more fun to watch than the two I brought up or Mahomes and I'm not really speaking for my own opinion, I was speaking for the Brock haters. You can make fun of Dak all you want but he's certainly not a douche. He won the Walter Payton award.

Yep, Purdy's success just shows that a bunch of coaching staffs at the blue blood schools missed. And the media draft analysts missed. And the NFL coaching staffs and front offices missed. They want to make talent evaluation look like a science over which they are the masters. But Brock balling out at an MVP level is a blaring reminder that there is some art to it, and the power players are not all knowing.

And it isn't like Dak was a top 10 pick. He was picked at the end of the 4th round. He had to silence some doubters as well. I know people like to hate on the Cowboys, I get it. But Dak is one of the most scrutinized players in the NFL - Cowboys starting QBs always are - and he has handled it well.

It's not true at all. McShay is wrong. Who the hell is McShay anyway and what does he know about football? Self described draft expert who has no real football knowledge. The Patriots would be better with Brock by a lot.

And the Jets too. I would take Brock over Rodgers. I think Rodgers is washed up, even if he wouldn’t have gotten hurt in week one.

I was watching one of the youtube breakdowns of BPs game against the cardinals and the commentator flat out said that the biggest thing against BP for MVP is that he has proved so many people wrong when it comes to talent evaluation. Not only did they miss, he has come out of the gates absolutely storming. Just flat out kicking ass.

I do think that BP not being flashy does hurt him. As impressive as his decision making, timing, and football IQ is, it's not "exciting." He's not Lamar running on a busted play for 35+ or Mahomes scrambling for his life and doing one of those crazy side arm passes while diving sideways that Kelce comes snags and puts another 20+ yards on.

I think Brock over Lamar is pretty clear, but despite being old Rodgers has a ton of experience at the highest level. He has a lot tricks up his sleeve. I like Brock better but I don't think that is nearly as cut and dried.

I'm pretty sure this is what BWR was saying above. He wasn't saying that watching Brock play is boring but it doesn't have the wow factor that a lot of the more athletic QBs have. We all know it is better to have a QB that does all of the right things so he doesn't have to continually make all of those wow plays with his feet but for the uninitiated or unknowledgeable fan it looks better to make a 3 and 11 by scrambling all over rather than making the on target and on time throw that was there because you looked the LB away with your eyes to get him open.

The one that really gets my goat is yards after catch. A QB absolutely contributes to yards after catch:
1. Understanding what defense is doing pre-snap and what you want to do against that look.
2. Understanding what defense is doing post-snap and what you want to do against that scheme.
3. Manipulating defenses with your eyes.
4. Going through progression to find the open player - sometimes 3 or 4 reads deep.
5. Moving within or out of the pocket to buy time for someone to get open while continuing to look to pass rather than run.
6. Make a throw with anticipation and on time.
7. Make a throw accurately so receiver can continue to run at speed and away from defender.

Why do people here Keep saying that Brock is not exciting to watch? I think the Niners always get the highest ratings when they’re in prime time, and people usually tune in when something is fun to watch and exciting to watch.. He scrambles he makes plays he is the quarterback of one of the more prolific offenses in recent memory, and they’re executing that offense like a well oiled machine. I just don’t get the whole premise.

You know who else scrambles and makes plays... Dak.. lol you can't call Dak boring and say Brock isn't boring. They basically play the same style of football. Drop back and make the throw and run if it's there.

Brock is very plain vanilla in the way he plays and thats 100% ok.

He makes the reads, makes the throws, and gets the job done.

Never said he's not doing okay. Geeze.

Everything is relative and, relatively speaking, Brock Purdy is the most underpaid player in the history of professional football.
2001 Tom Brady begs to differ.
