*** Official #7 Texas (SAMSUBA) vs IOWA STATE Game(Day) Thread ***

This isn’t meant to be an anti-Campbell post, but that was pretty much the quintessential “big game” in the Campbell era (see any Iowa game).

- Awful special teams directly costing ISU points
- Mindless penalties killing important drives (seriously, we have to lead the nation in formation/procedure penalties)
- Bad playcalling UNTIL your back is completely against the wall, then it’s too little too late
- Inability to get the momentum changing turnover on defense
He's 4-6 vs top 10 teams..idk if it quintessential, but I'd like to know what other coaches at peer programs records are against the same. They're top 10 for a reason. Can't expect to win them all

KU yes we should have beat and of course we should beat Ohio BUT if what happened in that game is what got Campbell to let Nate loose a little more on offense (which it has) then thank God it happened.

Because if we squeak out that Ohio win nothing changes and we likely don’t have 5 conference wins either.
I think we should have beat Iowa, we made the game easy for them. Called a very vanilla game on offense, played it not to lose.

It might........or might not.
Had to listen to the radio feed the first half. Walters said that Ewers would had been sacked if the OL didn’t hold ISU on one of those “touchdowns”. I can’t verify if they were correct or not, but it seems to me being sacked would greatly alter the play

If they didn't commit the penalties, the result of the play might have been different also
Only people who should be checked into Arkham Asylum actually expected this team to be better than 6-6 this year, given how bad last year was and the gambling scandal that cost us numerous key players. Despite all that 6-6 will be our floor at the end of the year.

Perhaps you should gain some perspective on what this season actually was before you post any more bad takes.

Exactly. Very little pointed to “fantastic season”, they started like crap, but succeeded and turned it around.

Basketball is a completely different story. Every team shuffles deck every year now and we brought in more studs than almost anybody. I have top half of big 12 and ncaa expectations based on previous seasons and our talent vs rest of the field.

I don’t disagree. Texas is simply a better team but I also think that Iowa State had an opportunity to win that game. It’s just that I feel like I’ve seen that same game play out in the same way so many times before

Wasted too many drives by trying to run the ball. Thought there should've been some more offensive creativity to use Texas' aggression against them. Worked perfect on that pop pass to Dean.
That was set up by the run.

But I also thought more misdirection was needed

Special teams

1) wtf happened to kicking it into the endzone?
Is shackford injured? He was high percentage touchback until the BYU game. Since = 0 tb
2) punt coverage was bad
Multiple big returns
3) punt return was bad
Noel fumbling
4) kicking game bad
Missed FG, that can happen. Blocked extra point not so much.

Despite all of that I'd say it was a 6 point swing overall. Missed Fg plus 3pt swing on the blocked XP

Our dream of winning a low scoring running attack game plays right into Iowa…it’s why we suck against them. Even when we had the best running back in the country, running the ball directly into that defense is exactly what they want.

Hope Verdon is okay. We don’t look the same when Verdon’s out.
He might be the most important player on our "D".

One of the trainers looked like she was kind of chuckling a little when he was being tended to after going down, but then he went to the locker room so yeah, hope he's okay.

Texas also could have easily scored 40 if a couple calls didn’t go our way. We should not have won this game.

We need an Oline that can actually create a run lane! Same old story. Can’t run RPO with less than 20 yards rushing. ST failed again causing loss of 4 points and adding 2 for UT. Gave them a 6 point gift. Offense struggled all night and D had to save them. Good riddance to those swine! Will enjoy watching them fail in SEC.

JW's correct on that, no question.

I smell a big play coming, but the D would still need to get a stop for it to make a difference
I was waiting also. We only had a couple, needed a few more. Every time I thought we might get a stop, TX made a play. Every time I thought we might get a big offensive play, TX made a stop. They were the better team.

Still we were close, just not close enough.
