Future Big 12 FB Opponents/Schedule Announced

Would I prefer we play KSU every year? Yes. Am I super bothered by it? Not really. Just a reality in terms of growing the conference.

I want whatever makes our schedule as easy as possible.

We get absolutely zero recognition from a typical top ten schedule that has been the norm so I want lots of 30-50 ranked schedules like big ten teams have gotten to feast on. Get wins.

Anyway, here’s the bottom line: if you can’t have a round robin, any schedule you come up with will have problems.

Divisions? You get certain teams you play every year, and others you miss for a year or two. The problem is it’s impossible to balance divisions strength-wise; somebody is getting an easier schedule than somebody else (B1G West, anyone?).

Pods? Pods are nothing but smaller divisions, with the exact same issues.

Protected rivals? This can be a good way to keep longtime rivalries going without a break, but you either have only a few (like the B12 in this announcement) or you force rivalries that really aren’t rivalries. Those protected games also take away the opportunity for both teams to play a wider range of conference games.

The B12 plan to ensure everybody plays everybody else, home and away, over 4 seasons is probably about as good as you can ask for. Still, somebody’s getting an easier schedule than somebody else every year, but you can’t prevent that if you don’t have a round robin. And, as we are all discovering now, that plan also means contests that have been played for a very long time are not going to happen in some years.

Expand things to 24 or 30 teams, well … that’s gonna be some mind-blowingly unbalanced schedules, but there’s simply nothing that can be done about it.

I get excited for winning. This gives us a better opportunity.
We’ve had no problem beating Texas lately. Beating Texas is a lot more fun than beating Houston. Beating KSU or OSU is more fun than beating UCF. But I get it. Hopefully it finally leads us to a 10 win season.

Then why do some get a protected rival, while others dont?

Iowa has 3 rivals, when others in the B1G only have 1.

there are a few in this sched that have 1 rival while others have none..

So what is the difference if some have 2 while others have 1.
18 teams vs 16 teams and the Big Ten is only guaranteeing you see every team home and away once every 5 years instead of 4. There's a lot more flexibility when you've got an extra 9 games to work with.

Hate to break it to you but we are considered small games to pretty much everyone on our schedule.
Yeah, but I don’t care what they think of us. Oh well, it is what it is. The Big 12 did the best they could with this situation.

But you lose annual regional and historic games.

Somehow a few got to keep their annual rivals, but ISU gets screwed as usual.
Hopefully we will still play Iowa every year. That's ISU's biggest rivals. KU and KSU are bigger rivals than KSU and ISU.

I would have preferred pods as well (for the simplicity more than anything), but I'm sure there were a few schools that weren't happy with various pod proposals. The final product is good because we still play every team Home and Away at least 2 times in 4 years. And we play the teams that are relatively close geographically to Ames 3 times in 4 years.

Arizona/ASU, Utah/BYU, Kansas/K-State, TCU/Baylor are the only protected games for this round.
Don't tell me TCU/Baylor (The Revivalry) counts but Farmageddon don't. Very similar.

It must be about KSU having KU more than ISU, and not being willing to give anyone 2.

I honestly forget that we have played KSU so many years in a row until the week we play them. Even then all it seems like to me is a fun little anecdote that a tv announcer can use to fill air space during the broadcast.
