This would fall under "touchdown/no touchdown", runner down/not down", and "player or ball inbounds/out of bounds" at the minimum. It was certainly reviewable.

I give the refs credit for making the correct call under a great deal of pressure....showed tremendous courage.

But I was disappointed they allowed the Hawkeye crowd to pelt the Minnesota bench with water bottles after the call was made. It was so bad that PJ had to move his players and coaches onto the field to avoid getting hit. PJ screamed at the refs for an unsportsman call, and he was 100% correct, but the refs allowed the riot to continue. Hawkeye fans showing their true colors .

It's not a penalty, it's just a dead ball when the receiving team catches it, so there's no reason to throw a flag. In this type of situation, the refs are supposed to allow the play to run to its conclusion and then do a review, so I think they handled it correctly.

Ok, my bad, I thought it was a penalty to call a fair catch, but then attempt to run , to gain yards after the catch.

My son just told me about the fair catch interference earlier. Did de Jean actually stick his arm out to make contact with the defender to get the call? If so, it makes it seem like he is definitely trying to play the system and leads credence to him trying to confuse the MN players.

I agree. Cooper clearly waived his left hand and pointed with his right. A person can argue whether him arm/hand was high enough to signal a fair catch. However, he clearly waived his hand/arm. Therefore, it’s a fair catch in my book.

It doesn’t matter what DeJean’s intention was. He waved his arm and that was against the rule. If a pitcher commits balk, it does not matter if he was trying to deceive base runners.

That's pretty much the difference between a valid and invalid fair catch. Valid provides protection, invalid does not. It literally does not matter his intent. He waved his arm, so he signaled a fair catch.

Since when do officials get interviewed about crucial calls? I'm stunned this actually took place.

Depending on the conference rules, it can be a really convoluted process -- so it doesn't happen often.

Generally, it's one person (pool reporter) who can request the interview, but it's limited to a question about the application or interpretation of a rule. Nothing regarding judgment calls.

He wasn't calling for a fair catch, he was directing his teammates to clear out on a short punt that he didn't feel he could catch on the fly, which might bounce and hit one of them (or even hit them before hitting the ground).

They made the correct call, but let's not pretend that he was actually calling for a fair catch or trying to trick anyone. He was just trying to avoid a situation like the one in the PSU game a few weeks ago and saw an opportunity to make a play.
