TJ and Randy

I respect the heck out of Randy. He has paid his dues, and then some. I enjoy reading his stuff.

I think two things are possible here:

1) Randy was simply implying that the Iowa State players might be more gassed so to speak because of the extra distance to places like Orlando and Provo. They already travel to places as far as and further than Houston and Cincinnati. I think it was an awkward transition he was trying to make, but I did not detect any hint of tongue in cheekness.

2) TJ made a hilarious joke that had nothing to do with Randy's question, and Randy did not take it in stride very well.

I don't think TJ completely understood the question. Which I don't blame him as Randy's questions are rarely direct; they usually have some pondering/diatribe and you often forget what he's ultimately getting at.

the cyclone fanatic criticism of the media is so exhausting/pointless.

we complain no one covers us.

we are hypersensitive if a national person doesn't know everything about us.

we complain when someone is too negative/critical/objective (Hines)

we complain when someone is too nice/bland/uninformed (Randy)

we complain if someone is too optimistic/positive (CW and Blum)

and on, and on, and on.....you can't win.

My wife and I used to work in newspapers. We think the role of the news media is very important, trying to keep the populace informed about what’s happening is key to society, and print media in general does a better, more thorough, and more comprehensive job of that than TV/online sources. And let’s face it, a pretty high percentage of news you find online started at a newspaper anyway.

That said, today’s population doesn’t care to get their information from newspapers. That’s led to a race to the bottom for print media, as they cut costs by slashing their staffs and making their product worse (Gannett, owner of the DMR and many other papers, is terrible for this, as mentioned they’re all becoming USA Today clones … but the CR Gazette is following a similar path, printing the paper in Des Moines instead of CR so the morning edition has no news or sports coverage or high school scores from the previous evening, removing all color from the paper, cutting staff and moving their operations from the historic Gazette building to a tiny office space tucked under a parking ramp). It’s sad, but I can see why print media has to cut their costs - people aren’t buying their product anymore, they think they can get their news for free online.

I still don’t understand how newspaper owners think they can increase revenue by making their product worse, though.
People absolutely can get their news for free online. Virtually all of the same information is out there and doesn't cost a dime. Sure, there's a lot more nonsense to sift through, but it also allows readers to learn about events from different perspectives (not that people do this often enough).

I view print media a lot like taxi companies who haven't tried to offer a competitive product to Uber/Lyft - a dying industry that could have evolved or try to compete with newer & better alternatives but chose to hold on as long as possible.

AND, we even complain about the complainers!!!!
