49ers - Brock Purdy - Still and Always #1

He’s not starving, but keep in mind he’ll be taxed heavily. At that income, it looks like take home after federal, state, and local taxes is $487K.

$5K/month should be doable. $10K/month is a little steep for his income, but still very much doable for the average Joe. It looks like the average rent in SF is ~$3K/month which isn’t as bad as I expected. He’s not going to be driving any lambos with that take home though.
Take out agent fees as well.

I don't know, they already have Dr. Toboggan for that.

Purdy earns $900k a year. That's in the top .5% of everyone living in the United States, including California. He's doing fine. Keep playing like he has and he'll get his, just like all the others who perform well do. This is a silly thing to concern yourself with!
Al Michaels said this same thing. "He is only making $900K, but he is still making $900K."

I always thought that was Peyton Manning's biggest failure. He kept signing huge contracts which then limited the other players on the team, and it was those limitations that prevented him from winning more rings. IIRC, Brady always signed lower contracts, which allowed the team to load the roster with rookies and vets.

Yeah in the first quarter the "Purdy is only good because of weapons" people might have been getting excited because it looked like the offense was a little limited compared to usual.

Then they just slowly built up and got it rolling like usual, almost like there's this idea that it might take a little time for any team to adapt to losing a key starter.

I will say it must be really frustrating to have to try to stop big plays from CMC and Deebo simultaneously, to me that's the truly unique thing you almost see. I agree with the announcers that it's insane how they just randomly switch positions from RB to WR and there's really no big drop off between them wherever they line up and they can kill you from anywhere.
And people also need to realize that Deebo and Aiyuk are not blow the top of the defense kind of guys. As good as Deebo is it’s because he’s a YAC machine. Aiyuk is a sound guy but not a scary deep guy.

As good as the weapons are, they are still playing against fairly compact field. It still requires good accuracy to make this offense work.

Jordan did some of both throughout career. Years where he maxed out salary, but also years where he took a little less to have a better team. I’m guessing while not MJ level that Manning made as much from endorsements as salary? It certainly seems like he’s been in the most commercials of any human, maybe him or Flo from Progressive.

1 - He's making it in San Fran where 900K doesn't go far.

2 - I totally hate how salaries are in sports vs educators, etc.

3 - There is no guarantee that he'll stay healthy and because of the restrictions on rookie salaries, there is a lot less in the bank if something were to happen.

I'm not saying he's not doing well, but in relation to the area, the position, and his performance thus far he's grossly underpaid.

Living in Bay Area for 900k a year as young bachelor sounds like a dream, give me that in a nano second over the same 900k in Cleveland. I’m in SoCal on a small fraction of that and life is still good.

If he only made 200k or 250k maybe he’d be shredding water because I’m sure lifestyle expenses are higher than a typical 23 year old for an elite pro athlete just in terms of taking care of himself.

Brock got engaged over the offseason so he’s not a bachelor.

Purdy is grossly underpaid. The market value for a team captain QB with his wins and overall #’s is nowhere near 900k. It’s a rookie contract problem, as others have said.

Also—Kinda silly to compare the market value of an NFL QB to the American population.

Cousins probably is a better QB right now than Purdy is but the difference in their contract values is larger than the difference in their playing ability.
Based on performance there is no point in Kirk Cousins career where he has played better than Brock Purdy’s first 11 games and it’s not close. Gottlieb suggesting that the 49ers pay $29 million/yr more for a lesser QB is an all time worst take.
