Asking again: Has the rot started to set in?

Has the rot started to creep in?

Finally, Iowa State fans are starting to realize that Campbell is not the coach to take us out mediocrity. We deserve better! He doesn't seem to understand that he needs to do things differently in order to have a successful football program.

No blame. You are a P5 school and should still go win that game, especially giving up only 10 points. If you are afraid to go on the road against a MAC team then you have bigger issues. Sure G5 teams win plenty of times, but what we saw yesterday was a G5 team that was better and tougher in the critical areas of the game, specifically the offensive line.

Every g5 team I watched yesterday including western Michigan against Iowa played far better on offense than we did. Colorado State looked like an nfl team compared to ISU.

Rot? No.
Reality? Probably.

Like WVU, ISU isnt in a state with tons of recruits, plus it may not be able to compete for the top players bc TCU and Taco Tech have more NIL money.

MC did extremely well when he had talent, especially Brock under center and maybe the best tight end ive seen, Throw in a couple of NFL rbs and a NFL wr, and combined with a tough as nails defense, MC led ISU to a fiesta bowl victory.

Im not sure saban could win with ISU's current roster. When you cant run on a mac team, youj got nothing going for an oline. You are not winning many games without a good oline.

There was a graph showing how many NFL draft picks WVU had prior to NB--it was a lot. For a stretch of a few years WVU was 2nd only to OU in draft picks, and many were in the 1st round.

2022 was the 1st year WVU had zero draft picks in a very long time, and NB has had only 4 in his 5 years at WVU. to be fair, WVU had a few but they got stolen by Georgia, Maimi, fsU, lsu and others who paid more NIL.

NB said he had a top 10 defense in 2020 and lost 7 starters to the NIL portal.

point being, i think the ISU's and WVU's will struggle in the NIL/portal era.

The offense doesn’t have to be THIS bad without nfl future stars. Anybody who plays a lot of video game football could have manufactured more than 11 yards on rushing plays by opening up the offense and attacking more of the field.

11 yards on rushing plays…and we stuck with it!

this, if we had any offense, we would've won 35-10 and no one would be questioning anything

We have seen it recently with Mevis. That kid was very good, and it shows how important a kicker is. Points are points, and as CW mentioned on the recap last night, if you are going to play in a phone booth and muck up the game the way we do, you HAVE TO have an elite kicker that is going to get you those 3 points nearly every time. You can't play low-scoring, tight games, and expect to win when you can't make FGs.

Yesterday (and I mentioned this in the gameday thread) the missed FGs should NOT be the scapegoat here. You are playing a MAC team that scored only 10 points and the thing that could have won you the game is a couple of missed FGs? BS, you as the P5 school need to get in the end zone against a freaking MAC team. We needed two TDs yesterday to win that game. That's it. No excuse losing ANY game while only giving up 10 points, including if you somehow only gave up 10 points to Georgia.

I agree. But the kicking is such an obvious thing to look at. It's consistently bad between coaching staffs. We're like an abused puppy. It doesn't matter that we have a new home. We're still scared.

Sometimes in life you just have to step up and admit when something isn’t working anymore. If this doesn’t feel like the Rhoads era or the Prohm times in basketball, then maybe you weren’t around for those eras.

I like the passion, but did you become a fan in 2017?

It’s bittersweet, but it’s just more of the same of what we’ve had since 2017.

A quality defense, suspect ST, and horribly coached offense

The difference is there are no individual talents on offense to bail out the staff. Jump balls to Lazard or Butler. DM setting records for most broken tackles and YAC. Two top NFL rookies playing with a NFL TE.

I’m surprised you’re so bad at recognizing rot. The team, despite being poorly coached on offense, still plays hard. Prohm had a roster with NBA talent nearly fight on the court. Then a season in which players quit.

Food poisoning can do that. Where did the food come from? Have they figured that out?

In Campbell's postgame comments, he said "it ran through us in the last 48 hours," which would go back to sometime Thursday. But then when Randy Peterson asked if they got it in Ohio, and Campbell said "when we landed," which would have been Friday afternoon. So the timeline seems a little fuzzy, but it does seem to suggest that whatever it was came from Ames or the plane rather than Ohio.

That said, maybe it wasn't food poisoning at all but norovirus, which was (anecdotally) going around weeks ago. And that stuff is crazy contagious, so if it is norovirus there might be a lot more guys getting sick in the next day or two.

I saw this on Twitter yesterday too, people gloating that they were the first to recognize how bad things are, like a journalist insisting on credit for being the first to break a story. Congrats, I guess?

I think it's more that, after last week, people who complained that the offensive style and playcalling was terrible were told they were only mad because ISU lost to Iowa, which wasn't true, and this game proved it.

Bottom line. Campbell is going to be given at least a couple years. ******** will not change reality. And reality may be that we really are the coaches graveyard that inevitably gets all Cyclone coaches….unless you leave when you get the chance. Majors had a losing record his last year with George Amundsen at QB. And Earle left just as Hayden was hired. Earle took Ohio State job and was fired. Finished up at UNI and Colorado State. That is a helluva fall.

Campbell will either figure it out or in a couple years he will likely be gone if he does not. Best for all if he figures it out. We’ll see what happens.
I am going to go out on a limb here and just guess you never liked Earle Bruce. What the heck does he have to do with CMC's current intransigence?

Sure, there were people saying that. I don't think that was the consensus though. Hell, I started a thread complaining about those very things (among other things) and got very little pushback.

Love Earle Bruce. Was in the stands during his last 4 years at every home game. Plus Iowa when we lost 12-10 to Iowa. Only TD was a Tom Buck punt return. Earle ran the same stubborn run, run, run style. Conservative. Relied on the defense. Fans bitched constantly. Won some close games. Lost many too. Ohio game was pathetic. This is Campbell’s chance to fix it. He’ll get this year and next for sure. And I will cheer for him to do so. And if he hasn’t fixed things then JP will need to enact his plan for that scenario.

People like CMC in Ames a lot and would quickly get back on board if steps were taken to revamp the offense, even with only a few tangible results. I think it's entirely up to him how this plays out.
