What’s going at Casey’s?

I always liked QTs when I lived in Des Moines. I stopped at one outside of Kansas City a couple weeks ago and still liked it.

They're the reason that the store in Iowa is called Kwik Star. It's actual name is Kwik Trip, and that's what they go by in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

I just have them scan the QR code on my phone. It's much quicker if you have the app handy. Typing in your phone number should be simple enough, but it's a pain in the a at Casey's.

You get what you pay for.

QT pays above the typical market for cashiers. You rarely, if ever, catch someone working at a QT that's either slow or has subpar intelligence. When you pay relatively well it allows you to weed those clowns out and hire the best applicants.

QT hasn't seemed to prioritize the DM market as most of the stores (they do have) haven't been refurbed but in the KC area they have refurbed (or rebuilt) a majority of the metro stores. They are clean, they are fast and efficient, and they are consistent.

If you ask the average person in the metro "which gas station do you prefer" 9 out of 10, if not 10 out of 10 will say QT. The quality and efficiency have created brand loyalty and that in turn makes the company tons of $$$$. I surmise it will only be a matter of time before they get the same in the Denver area, as their options up until the last few years (the new Maveriks are alright) were subpart (can you say Loaf n Jug???).

The only reason I ever go into a Casey's down here is they have one in the Corbin Park area of OP that's close to the ball diamonds and soccer fields. It also has a self serve, soft serve machine. They should have one of those in every gas station, IMO.

Quik Trip literally has rebuilt half their stores and refurbished/refreshed the others in the DM market.

QT gave up on much of DMS, for the most part. They just never seemed to be very aggressive in the market. Having Caseys and Kum & Go probably didn't help their cause. It is crazy to see how well Kwiq Star is going and how much they are supporting local.

Not a lot of them around but you can geta dime off every gallon of gas just by scanning a bar code at Love's truck stop. Every time.
 
While we’re talking about other convenience stores, there used to be several Kwik Shops in the CR area, including three along a two-mile stretch of Center Point Road. They were always a few steps below Casey’s or most other convenience stores - way below the Kwik Stars when they started coming in - but hey, hard to lose money selling gas and candy and cigarettes and soda with those margins, right?

A few months ago all those stores got rebranded as Sinclair stations. New signs, fresh updates of the outside appearance, all kinds of new looks. Had to cost a pretty penny for somebody. Then a week or two ago they all started selling gas at bargain prices, like $2.99 or $2.49 a gallon. Raised the eyebrows of folks around here, it did!

But once their tanks were empty, they stayed empty with “No Fuel” signs on the pumps … and as of this week, all of those stores are closed. For good, it appears. Too bad for whoever shelled out the money for all those Sinclair signs.

QT’s freakin rock. I hated seeing so many of the DSM locations get bought out by HyVee.

Yeah I know I t wasn’t many but they have basically all but given up on the Des Moines market. Lol I’m just bitter because a couple of the locations were close to my current and former jobs.

I think they were all western suburb locations which some of us probably felt more. I went to that one on Hickman by Bucs arena all the time when I lived in Urbandale.

I've seen this a couple times in this thread, and I stop at them regularly when in Des Moines, and I don't get that impression at all. Maybe they aren't trying to grow more in Iowa, but their stores are well taken care of. MUCH more so than Casey's.

That was a while ago and before they sold the stores to HyVee. I don't remember the exact timeline, but I think they stopped investing in Des Moines around the same time Kwik Star showed up. They've completly ingored any new development while Casey's, Kwik Star, HyVee and Kum & Go built like crazy.

I hoping they would buy K&G, but unfortunaly it's more likely they leave the market at some point. They've been focusing on bigger cities like Houston, Dallas, Chicago,etc.

QT bailed out of the CR market many years ago, and that was a sad day. All those locations became Road Rangers first, and are now FasFuels. Truly sketchy bargain-basement convenience stores.

On another note any mention of QT reminds me of the DM Register statewide poll long ago (I think it was the 80s, if I remember right I was still in college) that asked Iowans who had the best cappuccino … and Quik Trip won by a large margin. While it’s true the coffee scene has changed a lot since then, I’ll never forget the time Iowans united to say a highly sugared powdery mix out of a plastic machine at a convenience store was the state’s best “cappuccino.”

We need a Convenience Store Rankings thread. To me, they all do someone really well:

Casey's (pizza and donuts)
QT (grill, soda/coffee setup)
K&G (rewards, gas is quick)
Kwik Star (chicken, overall food)

Overall, I'm taking QT over all of them if I have to pick a place and I'm visiting Casey's last. Casey's gas setup, lack of soda/coffee selection, slow checkout really holds them back.

I drove by the one at 42nd and Center Point going to Ace one day and had to do a double take at the price. The line was back to Donutland.
