As an NBA fan…it works fine that certain teams get on premier national tv more than others, it’s not unfair but just reality. When small market teams jump up and dominate like say the Spurs, they get a long run of the best TV coverage. When small market Charlotte struggles, yeah they become an exclusively local team for long periods.
That would be totally fine. I have little doubt the same could be done.
One loss @ #6 ranked Baylor by a point with horrific calls didn’t pass the eye test as well as getting blasted by 6 win VaTech at home.
That‘s the current legacy of this small committee.

It’s set up like that now which why the new “meetings” are worrisome. If it’s just going from top 6 champs to top 5 champs I can see that, anything else and they’re really screwing up.

Their fans are REALLY putting a lot of stock in the fact that their recruiting ranking is the highest of the new 16 teams.
They will be in for a rude awakening if they think they have more team speed than Baylor or TCU. I don’t need recruiting rankings to see some of that on the field. I have no idea what Baylor is rated in basketball recruiting but I know they permanently have 4-5 athletic rebounding machines.
So 8-4 SEC team can't be a Cinderella story that people embrace?
I understand your argument and would agree if the CFP Committee had created an 8 team playoff. But with 12 teams, it will be common for 3 loss teams to make the playoffs.
I am all for G5 schools having a path to the CFP, but competing for a national championship should have some criteria for excellence. So requiring teams to be ranked in Top 15 doesn't seem too restrictive.
If this were a computer ranking, I’d agree. But dealing with bias’s, I see the G5 teams getting crapped on because of their schedule.
Is an SEC 8-4 (8 conference game team) better than an 9-3 BXII team with 9 conference games? 8-4 BXII team? Or a BXII team that plays 10 P3 opponents in either scenario?
The big advantage to something like a central league is the bargaining power. What is espn going to do to fill all those Saturday tv slots?
IMO, If you can’t finish in the top 2 of your conference, are you really a candidate to be the top team in the country?
That leaves an 8 team playoff.. or a 6 team? Well, how many conferences do you have in the playoff?
I can see 3 teams depending on how the schedules play out. If #2 and #3 have the same record but never played each other, then I can see where all 3 can be deserving. With 18 team conferences, there will be a lot of situations where the top teams in conferences don’t play each other.
On the flip side of that, I don’t want to hear about how a team plays in the SEC or Big10 so they must have a gauntlet of a schedule. A little analysis of that schedule is needed when you only play 8 of the 15 teams in your conference. That’ll lead to some very soft schedules at times
I've always thought the magic # for a playoff is 6 or 8 because I have seen a few #5 and #6 teams entering bowls that had legit claim to national championship when the dust settled but nobody lower than that.
I'll take 12, but 8 was really the number required to include everyone worthy of a national title.
It won’t matter what the criteria is. A few teams every year will complain that they should have got in. I mean ffs we have 68 teams in the bball tourney and some 18-13 major conference team is screaming how they got screwed.
For the sake of argument, it’s not that uncommon for a Wild Card team to win the Super Bowl. I just hope it doesn’t end up like basketball where I rarely feel like the “best” team wins the tourney, just a team that got hot at the right time and had a good tournament.
And that is why I think expanding the playoff is a problem. Few to none are undefeated, few more with one loss, many with 2-3. Yes… drama sells TVs for commentary…. But at 8 …. Actual teams being left out due to narratives.
See, that's what I like about other sports like the NBA. You don't deserve to win if you don't win in the tourney. That's why you play the games
How uncommon…. That has happened once, and recently? Wildcards are more frequent to week 2 and sometimes week 3.
