***Official 2023 Chicago Cubs Thread***

I think these last few games have put us in an alright spot. If they get an offer that knocks their socks off on Belly and Stro, you take it. If not, you keep the core together and see if you have a little run in you. If nothing else we have some bargaining power with teams to say "well just keep them if that's the best you can do" without it looking like an outright bluff.

Trading Smyly ($8.5 Million) Mancini ($7 Million) and Barnhart ($3.5 Million) saves the Cubs $19 Million for 2024.

I know no team in their right mind would take any of them, but if the Cubs want $20 million more to spend on top FA's, maybe you throw one of them in with Bellinger or Stroman and diminish the return a bit. You could also put feelers out there for Morel or Madrigal and tell teams you'll diminish the return if they take one of those three.
If we trade Bellinger and Stroman then we have to get the most out of them you can in terms of prospects imo. It's likely we sign other players of Smyly and Mancini quality and compensation in offseason if they're moved anyway as I don't think there's a ton of 2024 ready talent in the farm system. Barnhart we probably don't need to replace but that's $3.5 million. I hope if we trade the goal is to further develop the young talent and not cut payroll we aren't the Royals

Major issue with Morel sticking to one position is he's a bad outfielder, below average 3B ans basically serviceable at 2nd.

Plus Suzuki likely isn't going anywhere so we are going to hopefully see Bellinger playing full-time spread around 3 positions and Tauchman in the OF mix.

So if we can keep Bellinger i think I'd rather see us go out and get an everyday 3B and trade Morel. Kid is just too hot and cold.
He might never be a plus fielder. But has he been bad at the MLB level because he's used as a utility player?

IMO he's too good a prospect to not create an environment that maximizes his talent.

I'm sure you watch a lot of baseball. Most players are hot and cold hitters. Explains why the MLB average is .240.

I'm not sure what the right answer is but Morel just gives me Javy vibes with a worse glove.

That being said, this organization might have built a nice group of prospects but once they do call them up, they **** with them. Moving Morel all around and especially putting him in LF for the first time....in Houston! One of the most difficult LF in baseball. The outcome was inevitable.

Mervis played everyday in A, AA and AAA last year. He immediately goes to the Arizona league and plays everyday. He got better with every step up. They bring him up to the majors and sit him against lefties. There was at least one stretch (maybe 2) we faced 3 LHP in a row...and he sits. Not until the end did he get more LH at bats but it was too late. This one really frustrates me because I think this guy can hit and he's way better than Mancini at first.

Agree with everything you said. Cubs have not committed to letting these guys play every day when they are called up and then inevitably have to send them back down to get straightened out. How is a guy like Mervis ever going to hit left handed pitching if you sit him against lefties? It's not a fluke that guys like him, Morel, and even Valasquez last year who all hit AAA pitching well then they get called up and aren't given everyday opportunities. I sure hope when PCA is ready they don't play these games with him too and just start him every day in CF regardless of the matchup and let him work through any adjustments instead of trying to "protect" him with kid gloves like they have done so many times with other guys that have been called up lately.

If they sell off pieces at the deadline then there is no reason not to play the young guys and try to get them comfortable playing every day regardless of the matchup. Mervis looked frustrated and lacking confidence by the time he was sent back down. Next time he is called up he's got to play every day and not mess with his confidence of knowing if there is a lefty on the mound he's sitting or if he struggles he'll be platooning with guys that won't be here long.

Is this available in Iowa?
I believe Iowa is "in-market" per MLB so I would think the service should work in Iowa.

"Marquee Sports Network launches direct-to-consumer subscription option for in-market Cubs fans (as defined by Major League Baseball), available for purchase at WatchMarquee.com and through the new Marquee Sports Network App"

Keep in mind what device you use as well. I checked my Roku Device and the updated app was on there but on the Firestick it's still the old version of the app.

How do I watch via the Marquee Sports Network App?

The Marquee Sports Network App is available via web browser at WatchMarquee.com, as well as on mobile/tablet devices and connected TV platforms.

See below for the current availability on specific platforms:

Supported Web browsers (WatchMarquee.com): Safari, Chrome

Connected TV device not listed? The Marquee Sports Network App supports screencasting from your smartphone, tablet or web browser to most smart TVs and connected TV devices.

Adrian Sampson outrighted to Iowa after being activated so no longer on the 40 man. Goes from competing for the 5th starter spot in the spring to possibly looking for a new organization if he doesn't want to accept the assignment to Iowa.

Looking at the rotation since the blister in London i have more faith in Hendricks and Taillon than Stroman. Eventually he'll get it back on track I'm confident.

Yes, I think we may be buyers unless we see a sudden collapse. Definitely need a starter to replace Smyly and likely another bat plus a couple relievers.

Next year I feel pretty confident we'll be ok with rotating young guys like Brown and Wesneski as 5th starters. Wouldn't mind Hendricks as the 4th either.

Lastly, Mastrobuoni has been pretty solid as of late.

I think .500 going into the Reds series is the magic mark. That would have you somewhere around 5 games out of the division and wild card. I also think it's interesting the announced the standalone Marquee service. They have to be desperate to give people a reason to watch.

Amazing what consistent at-bats can do for a guy. Probably wouldn't have worked with Mervis though, Mancini playing is far too valuable...

My jaw dropped at $20 a month, then I saw the Yankees service is $25 and Red Sox is $30. At least they're aware that the current product isn't comparable.

My trade deadline stance remains don't sell, don't buy, just build for 2024.

Keep Bellinger and show a little loyalty. Can't hurt heading into contract negotiations this offseason and you'd be getting a guy who can cover 1B and CF, both of which have youngsters coming up who could use a mentor like Belly.

If a team offers a guy for Stroman (who has contributed a negative WAR since June 20) who can positively contribute in 2024, take it.

I'm not opposed to spending from the farm to get some cost-controlled guys in **** franchises. Happ and Suzuki have no-trade clauses, so you're stuck with them in the corner spots. See if one of them outfield prospects can bring in anything worthwhile next year. Call up the Royals and see what it would take to get Brady Singer.
