Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

I have it as a backup if the internet goes down.
And the best way to watch sports until 4k. Until almost two years ago, always had OTA. Sunday Night on NBC other NFL games OTA were amazing. Tailgating too…. Super easy in Ames.

Who has an antenna these days? This coming from a boomer.
I have one! I bought it so that I could watch the 2020 Big Xii Championship Game when ABC was "in negotiations" with DirecTV. Don't use it much, but if the weather is bad, and DirecTV is out (like when we have the first snow of the year), I get to use it.

after more thinking I'm ok with UCONN....Randy Edsall had them competitive, they got a Fiesta Bowl, so it can be done. And if they suck fine, we could use an easy win anyway. Plus you get basketball which will be important when the new deal comes up. Im good with it.

It'll be a hell of a lot easier for them to recruit when they're solidly in a league rather than constantly in limbo as well.

I'm pro-UConn as an add. They check a lot of the boxes the Big 12 is looking to check and the Big 12 solves their football problem while keeping in a basketball focused league. Not sure there's a more mutually beneficial move out there for anybody.

I believe the university's want to keep them separate, because down the road they do not want this to turn into these players claiming that they were employees of the university, and thereby should have all the rights and benefits that an employee would have. If the NIL set up is outside the grasp of the university they cannot claim to be employees.
I think the universities have to stay out of the NIL collectives, and not just in the eyes of the NCAA. While there are sports specific donations and some allowance for differences in expenses on athletes in certain sports within reason without violating Title IX, the NIL collectives are not part of the university. If the university starts getting involved that seems ripe for a class action lawsuit.

I get that Iowa fans and our states sports media are generally dumb and think it’s a football program that also runs some sort of school, but the constant complaints about Barta not handing over donor info to their collective made me laugh. Sure, have your AD promote diversion of finite donor funds from the athletic department (subject to Title IX) to a collective that circumvents the athletic department and university. No legal problem there at all. Even dimwit Barta, who couldn’t get out of his own way in terms of lawsuits figured that one out.

I agree, I have not read anything at Iowa or any university that is counting NIL donations for things like better seating or allowing the purchase seats for away games.

I still believe that most of the extra money that EIU and the rest of the conference teams will end up in the secondary sports and will not greatly affect their FB and MBB programs nearly as much as their fan base think it will.

Go to their boards and you hear them talking about the other three conferences will become the minor leagues to the B10 and SEC, primarily because of the money in those programs.

And if CU is the only PAC 12 add then it’s an absolute no brainer. Making things work doesn’t mean getting exactly what you want whenever you want it. That’s not where we are at.

If the NIL has 501 (c)3 status then it appears that it would be tax deductible. If not then it appears it would just be a payment. The We Will Collective is a 501 (c)3.
I’m not a tax accountant but something seems off here. To take a deduction you cannot receive value for your donation, even if the donation is to a 501c3. For the kids to receive NIL dollars they are supposed to provide value for payment. The two do not seem to align. At the very least the deduction would seem to be against the spirit of the law. This is a very big deal whichever way it pans out.

What's this based on? If football is what primes the pump I'd be willing to bet that football is the first place that extra $$$ goes... facilities, coaches, facilities, coaches, etc. Not saying track and gymnastics won't benefit some, but I don't see any logical reasoning behind the belief that those non-revenue sports are where the bulk of extra media dollars end up. Makes little sense.

I am basing in on what EIU has been building facility wise the past 10 years. They have redone the North Endzone, have a new press box, redid their locker rooms and coaches' offices, built a new nutrition center, just what more can they spend this new money on over there in Eastern Iowa? Saw the other day they gave raises to all the assistant coaches, Parker is up to $1.4 million now, outside of salary for coaches, just where is that money going to be spent on football?

In basketball they just built a new practice facility, unless they are going to build a new bb only area, they should be good facility wise in BB and FB for years to come.

Additionally, CU becomes a geographic rival for BYU. UCONN becomes a geographic rival for Cincy/WVU/UCF. Maybe this lets us stay with the Midwest Big 8 schools instead of getting shoehorned into forced “protected” rivalries with either the east or west schools.

I seriously doubt any P5 program would run out of ideas on how to spend $$$ on football facility upgrades.

So be specific here, what does EIU need that they have not already rebuilt over the past 5 to 10 years. I suppose they could take down the east side of the stadium and rebuild that. You hear people talking about redoing the South bleachers, like the North bleachers, but the south ones were rebuilt in the last 15 years.

So just what can they spend this new found money on for football or basketball, and be specific.

All interesting points here. I think the universities will easily have a way of knowing how much a person has contributed to NIL. I'm not sure how they would, as university and NIL need to be separate. But count on them knowing. They can make their ticket allotment sales accordingly. Not sure on the tax write off thing.

I hope it is a huge problem for them, but somehow I doubt it will be.
Disclosure of a donor list would be a good way to get shut down.

It is deductible and the players are providing value at WeWill.
