Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

Yea, is it "hey, we have all seen some preliminary numbers and the solidarity is through the roof," or "hey, at least one school is pretty much out the door."

Gotta imagine it’s a positive movement. Otherwise, I doubt they make a public comment. But it could just indicate how bad it has been in the room that any positive news can shift the mood of the group. That part is never reported on by the PAC media.

The PAC is supposed to be better in football this year. Given his MO, I wouldn't be shocked if Kliavkoff tries to push the deal into 2024.

does it really matter if no eyeballs want to watch them be good at football? and how much of that rise is UCS being back to relevant? because they are gone after next season.

I can't imagine he'd be able to do that without defectors.

Universities and athletic departments need to get budgets together and I don't think any university leader (who tend to be risk adverse) in their right mind would want to go into 2024 without knowing what conference they'd finish the year in.

Not to mention that any conference these schools may move to are going to need advanced notice for onboarding/logistics/schedule making.

Kliavkoff is playing with fire.

My guess is they simply recognize that it’s going to take some time due to the creativity they’re having to contend with and that Arizona and Colorado aren’t going to move without having a full picture of both options. There’s nothing the Big 12 can do to force Arizona and Colorado to jump ship as they know the offer will still be there a year from now. Likewise, it doesn’t appear the B1G is imminently going to add Oregon or Washington.

That does give them time in that context. It doesn’t remove the huge cloud hanging over them though.

Based on it coming from Canzano- he's alluding the tv deal is good enough to keep the Pac12 together.

At this point, who cares. Fall camps start in 3 weeks- can't wait.
On a side note, but really back to the original few+++ pages of this thread, what recruiting effect will it have for USC and UCLA to be soon playing in the B1G? Specifically, the athletes must now take into consideration that if they sign with USC/UCLA, they will be enduring much longer road trips, on a routine basis. In effect, a road game into B1G territory will add at least 1.5-2 hours of air time, one-way. That adds up. Would a recruit therefore think twice about signing with said USC/UCLA when they could sign with another school, or tOSU, Michigan, any of the top SEC schools, and more or less, only have to play regionally, most games?

Sure, USC/UCLA will be more secure, make more money, etc., but the switch to the B1G is not without cost for them. I'm sure they may have been told that there are at least two more west coast teams (UO, UW?) to be added in the future, to offset this problem.

In the same boat. Would be cool to get a few of those four corner schools, but at this point I really don't care. The PAC is done for regardless after this little deal they are going to put together. It's just a band aid on a gun shot wound for a few years.
Not to fret, even though this GSW has missed the heart, it has collapsed the L lung and is is causing massive internal bleeding.

Other than that, nothing to worry about.

I never played organized sports beyond middle-school so this is uninformed speculation, but I doubt travel distance by plane is going to factor in much, if at all. The kids are so focused on being on the biggest stage possible even if they know it's not to eventually get to the NFL. NIL, TV exposure, the swag, playing at Michigan, tOSU, etc all would be way higher on their lists in my guess.

The only scenario I could see distance being a factor is for those players/families where it's super important that the parents can go to as many games as possible. But even the PAC was pretty spread out to prevent most of that.

It's an interesting question. I suppose it could dissuade some. But what's more important to elite west coast recruits, going to a school that's close to home and enduring longer road trips, or moving to a school across the country and being far away from home but having shorter road trips? I think one of the big draws will be playing on all of those national TV channels/slots... FOX on Big Noon, CBS at 2:30, NBC prime time.

There won't be any negative impact to football or basketball recruiting because of travel.

Yep. To me I would think this is a recruiting advantage. I am assuming these college athletes are more than willing to trade a 3 hour longer flight for a chance for "free travel." Pppsshhh when I ran track at Iowa State I can't tell you what my time was in the 200 meter dash that day, but I remember the town I ran the 200 meter dash in that day. Every weekend I headed to a different state to compete and absolutely loved that benefit and was a big part of why I chose Iowa State.

Maybe, maybe not. All other factors equal, the old PAC 12 vs. the new B1G, for USC/UCLA recruits, perhaps the old PAC would win out.

But as we know, the factors are no longer equal. Still, I would think it might be a factor to consider.

Would you feel that same way if you were a West coast guy, and ran for USC? And now you must endure routinely longer fights to the Midwest, and beyond, in order to run your sport.

I agree with you. They will likely lose a few LA area recruits but gain a few Midwest recruits.

The top programs already recruit from all over the country. Cali recruits have been going to the Midwest, Florida, bama, etc for years. I don’t really see much of that changing. Maybe the only difference we see is USC’s recruiting getting a bump with their new HC and more premier games. That’s about it.

We shall soon see. It's a new phenomenon, longer travel time. And it seems to be here to stay.

It’s not new. Look at Ohio State last year, 8 of their top ten recruits are from outside the Midwest. Florida, texas, San Diego, Carolina’s, etc. The elite recruits have been going all over the place for a long time.
Recruiting is nationwide… well global really. And LA kids have their schools they want .. if they want USC/UCLA, they aren’t changing their mind because they are now in the BIG.

Personal anecdote, our scholorship athlete for USC didn’t care their first year on campus will be in the BIG, they wanted to be a Trojan because of the coaches, tradition, and environment.
