Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

Yeah but unfortunately, in terms of athletics and realignment, we are going to hear AAU all the time. It is taking on a cult of like an Ivy school.
What? When you have a commuter school like USF now be in AAU just because it has a medical school certainly doesn't suggest Ivy League like cult status.

I actually feel in a way this makes AAU membership more important. If the bar for entry is lower, it makes it look really bad if you aren't in.

It is like the evolving criteria for making a bowl game. In the 70s and 80s you could miss a bowl and still make a good case that you had a good team. Today, if you can't make the cut you are bad, period. The bar is lower, and thus failure to clear that low bar is a bad look.
So ISU should now add a medical school just because AAU changed their membership criteria?

AAU status has become increasingly diluted and less prestigious especially with their new adds like USF.

This, When USF and ASU are getting in, it is pretty clear that AAU membership doesn't mean what it used to.
Don't disagree, but the sports media play it up as the gold standard. And based on recent adds, it's apparent that universities are playing the game and value the association.

So my point is, Iowa State has to show it's academic chops. Is it publicizing where ISU fits in research among its peers - land grant or large research without medical school/hospital? Are there other associations like AAU that ISU is a member that highlight ISU's standing as a research school.

Unfortunately, perception is sometimes reality. The Big10 and Pac have convinced the masses that it's AAU or bust. As an outsider to academia, ISU is on the outside looking in..

You must not have read or disregarded the ISU press release I previously linked announcing their AAU withdrawl. They publicize that info prominently on their website and other applicable social media as required.

Again, with the recent AAU adds like USF, any rational person with AAU knowledge can easily ascertain the increasing dilution of AAU status due to med school emphasis even though a % of uninformed nitwits will continue to treat it like Ivy League status.

So I totally agree with AAU being overrated and skewed but you guys need to stop with the USF diluting idea. I know the US news ranking are flawed and much maligned on here but USF is actually 30 spots higher then ISU. Again not a perfect ranking system by any measure but just passing along that info

I read it a year ago and read it again today.

But putting out 1 press release doesn't solve the perception problem that AAU is the gold standard.

Gonzaga and UConn, COME ON DOWN!
I don't get why people want to make the conference even harder for us given our natural head winds and it already being far and away the toughest league in the land. You realize there are just as many losses as wins to go around and punching upwards is going to create fewer opportunities to be at the top.

You are completely right. On the other hand, it is nice to know that a 50-50 conference record will get us in the tournament comfortably every year, and the NCAA tournament is the measuring stick that the national conversation cares about.

On a personal level I'm conflicted because I like to see the teams win, but I also care 10x more when they are playing good teams. That bears out with the fan base too. The cream puff non con games don't sell out, but Kansas always does.

Thanks, Dennis Dodd. I couldn't calculate 440/10 myself. Appreciate the clarification that it's $44M per school.
Give Dennis some credit he's at least been one of the major talking heads to know whats coming for the Pac 12.

It's a numbers game. The more teams/good teams you add, the more bids you're going to get which leads to more money that rolls in. I mean, realistically, if Gonzaga keeps their current tournament trajectory they basically pay for their own reduced share in NCAA units.

Assuming the league goes to 20 league games. 8-12 is going to get you in every year assuming you don't completely **** the bed in the non-con.

I'd still rather go 12-8 than 8-12 more often:)

Gotta give #'s per school now because there's so much realignment and who is going to get money, who isn't.
