The gender of the singer of Sukiyaki, had me puzzled for years:

When I first heard Sting's Desert Rose I thought the parts sung by Algerian singer Cheb Mami were sung by a woman - until I saw the video, that is.

I don't remember for sure, but my guess is I assumed "I Saw The Light" was female singer back in the day.

I've had two friends BOTH tell me they initially thought I Saw The Light was a Carole King song. Not a Carole King penned song, a Carole King vocal!
I know that's hard to believe (the "I have had two friends part.)
First became familiar with this from the American Graffiti Soundtrack (8-Track) in my car back in the 70s. I had no idea this was a guy singing.

So, for a long time, I thought this song was a sapphic fantasy sung by a FEMALE teenage dirtbag. I was incorrect, but I feel like a female needs to cover this now. Apparently I missed the video for a while as well.
Blur has a lot of good tracks. This on features a great use of falsetto, and I absolutely still adore the video
