Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

I also found it interesting how he reiterated that the pro-rata clause only applies to ESPN, but that FOX’s portion of it is negotiable. So all these people who say that FOX won’t pay a cent more are full of it.

Another wild theory:

Since Fox does hold some cards. I wonder if they’ll back door to Yormark who they’re willing to pay up for. Perhaps they’ll use the Big 12 as an incubator to preserve whatever schools the Big 10 isn’t ready to add yet (ie Oregon and Washington) but may want the option of in the future. With this setup, ESPN still gets the late window they want. Fox still gets a piece of Oregon/Wash etc. and they can do it all without paying for the fat at the bottom of the PAC-12.

Just a thought. That wouldn’t be the worst thing ever for us…
My guess is FOX has rights of first refusal since they are a current rights holder.

Obviously, ESPN would have an interest in adding Big12 content as they could fill Thu/Fri/Sat nights with Big12 games. But they could also show ACC or SEC games during primetime. Also ESPN can always add P5 inventory to ESPN+.

But if FOX doesn't want more Big 12 inventory, that isn't necessarily bad. That opens the door for Amazon, Apple or maybe a linear Network.

IMO both the Big12 and top media value schools in Pac12 would benefit from a merger. Then let other members keep Pac 10/12 name and consolidate with MWC.

I am a big believer by 2030 there will be separate playoffs for Power, Group and FCS divisions.

Big 12 will take the 4 corner schools. Arizona, ASU,, Utah. Colorado. Makes geographic sense. Some great rivalries renewed. And cements the Big 12 as a major player. This really ratchets up the pressure on Washington and Oregon. Stick a fork in the PAC 12. Power 5 schools in Western time zones is a plus with the Big 12 for game inventory. Just a matter of time.

I could see this, and the PAC stays a "power" 5 conference on the backs of UO/UW and adds SMU, SDSt, and god knows who else.

Or maybe just the Arizonas come over. UA would appreciate the basketball. I am super agnostic about Utah and Colorado at this point. If they come, okay. If they don't okay. Give me the Arizonas as a better cultural, geographic, and institutional fit.

Then wait on whatever happens to the ACC in 10 years, and add teams in the east; would fill out the geography better for UCF & WV, and more population base there too. Although you can do that with or without Utah and Colorado - but you may end up with BC or Wake in that case. Key is you want to have as many teams as the SEC and B1G. They are both very likely going to 20 once the ACC is available.

Agree that we take the Arizona schools. They definitely will move. when the offer the PAC 12 gets is about half that of the Big 12 reality will set in.

I’m not sure there’s a need for Utah or Colorado. Not sure what value they offer. Arizona schools yes.

If ACC schools start scrambling, I see us taking Louisville, Virginia Tech, Pitt maybe?

Not a need exactly. But strategically you take them. They are P5 schools. And now PAC 12 has to add 4 more schools besides finding replacements for USC and UCLA. 6 schools to replace those who leave.

If the goal is to kill the P12, and I think it should be, then you take all four of the 4 corner schools, putting the league at 16 teams, equal to the B10 and SEC once UT and OU leave. Or you could just take the Arizona schools, then make an offer to Oregon and Washington with a 30 day time window to take the offer, otherwise the league is making Utah and Colorado the same offer.
If given a choice the league should take the Arizona schools, Oregon and Washington, but the last two want the B10 or SEC for the money, it would be interesting to see what happens to them if the P12 crashes with the loss of the Arizona schools and before the GOR in the ACC are up.

Agree this cat maybe isn't the best source, but this rings true....

"...some at ESPN have told people in the B12 that Kliavkoff seems to be either desperate or clueless"

Do you think that ESPN's desire to reduce P5 payouts by reducing P5 inventory has changed, just because the Big 12 elected not to go along with the idea and join the AAC? Of course not.
Except he passes his ideas off as facts. BIG difference.

Stew Mandel has been doing that on this exact subject since the start. But he has a byline so we have to pretend his ******** is different somehow. You should always consider the source, but Mhver3 is as full of it as any one else is.

At this point, I don’t think the Big12 is trying to destroy the PAC12. I think Yormark has positioned the conference to be a safe landing spot for those who want a place for when WHEN that conference fails.

The writing is on the wall, just thankful ISU is safe and the Big12 is viable still.
