*** Official #22 TCU vs #19 IOWA STATE Game(Day) Thread ***

He moves really well for a guy his size. Gets to his spots early which makes him a great screener. I think this is the most underrated part in his game. He really disrupts the other teams flow.

What I really like is his spacing as it's something this team generally does poorly (especially for how well it plays defensively). Kunc squares himself in front of his man, moves his feet, and refrains from senseless bodying, especially away from the basket. Gabe, Grill, Lipsey and Shoon pick up so many cheap fouls by bodying when it's completely unecessary. It puts teams on the line faster and results in players prematurely hitting the bench.

Jaz put on a clinic in fundamental basketball. About the only thing he did 'wront' the entire night was rush his shooting stroke on the 2 threes he missed (in a row) in the first half. But he slowed that back down and didn't miss from there on out.

Others have scored more but this is my vote for performance of the year. I thought he was outstanding in every phase for the entire game. If he was still out I highly doubt we win this one.

If our guards can get right, we cut down on the midleas TOs/fouls, and Jaz plays 70% as well as he did tonight, we are a dangerous team. It wasn't just a "great game" performance, it signified Jaz can be a 'go to' type of performer. He also gives us an outside threat we desperately needed.

Hollywood is one of the better officials out there. You know in the first 5 minutes how he will call it all game. My complaint with some recent officiating is they change how they call it between halves which is maddening

Exactly, the kids from both teams need to know that there will be consistency though-out the game.

It wasn’t just changing at the half but during the halves. You can’t miss a displacement foul and then call something extremely Ricky tack.

I think both of those could be a factor, but probably more so the latter. It seems to me that "the book" on stopping Iowa State's offense is to make them uncomfortable. That can mean applying pressure to the ball, but that can also mean being more physical off the ball to keep guys from being able to come off screens cleanly or catch passes on balance.

I think the increased off-ball pressure explains some of the offensive struggles of Grill and Kalscheur lately. If Grill is getting bumped all the time, that can't be good for his back, plus he can't get the shots he had gotten previously. Similarly, Kalscheur is excellent when his defender gets a little bit off-balance, but if the defender doesn't let Kalscheur catch the ball in the way he wants to, then Kalscheur loses the advantage.
Well if Osun could be a little bit more of a factor inside and I don't mean with just lobs off the pick and roll, that could help free up the perimeter a little. I just hope when they get into 'thee' tournament there will be more freedom of movt. than what we're seeing in big12 play on us. But...as soon as I say that, we don't want quick whistles with the way we play defense either. Just don't know what to ask for. lol

I'd put the chances of it actually happening at 0, but I'd really like to see Grill sit out the next two games. Don't even dress him. It's obvious to anyone paying attention that he hasn't been 100% physically since late in the Texas game, and now he's in a funk mentally as well. I can't imagine the two aren't related. It's no slight on him to say that THIS version of him doesn't improve our odds of winning at K-State or Texas. That said, getting him back to where he was before and during that home Texas game GREATLY improves our chances in two winnable home games, plus those of a decent run in KC and beyond.

As someone who's dealt with a bad back for the better part of 20 years, I can state unequivocally that there's no substitute for rest when it's hurting, and that's from a guy who's kicking around an office setting and doing yard work, not someone trying to compete at a D1 level. The kid needs a break....give it to him. Get his head and back right, and lets see what he can give us down the stretch.

I think we need to hope for a crew that allows for physical play. Our defense is predicated upon that, and our offense is used to it, so while freedom of movement would allow our offense to be better, it would probably be offset by the parade to the free throw line at the other end.

You are probably correct but we are only a game back. Steal and couple of tough road wins and we are in business
Not to mention, we can pick off one (or two) of the three teams ahead of us in the standings.

I don't expect it to happen in the slightest, but there's still opportunity to make some noise and improve our standing

He lost his cool pretty bad. Only time this year I've seen a player act out real bad after a foul call, and ended up running his mouth long enough afterwards to get T'ed for it.

It wasn't that bad, but given you never see it out of TJ coached players it stood out.

I'm not sure that sitting a couple games improves the mentality.

I know that sitting 2 games won't fix his back. Back issues are almost always lingering things that need a significant amount of time to fully recover from.

I don't have any #s to justify, but does the NCAA tourney go a bit like NFL playoffs? Have points of emphasis throughout the year, but get more lax with the whistle come tournament time?

I think it might be best long term if Kunc starts. It balances the line change of Kunc/Shoon and King/Jones. Also frees up Grill to sub in for Jalen/Gabe to keep the back court fresher down the stretch.

Well, the NFL wasn't "lax" on the most crucial 3rd down of the entire season, so, there is nothing you can count on.

I keep asking people...
- He held clearly twice. I have absolutely no fan interest in NFL and it seemed like something you could have called from the Goodyear blimp.
- Philly would have gotten the ball back with almost two minutes.
- So Philly offensive lineman get to hold multiple times on every play for a two minute drive and as many as 10-15 plays? Why shouldn't they? No holding in final two minutes.

Seems insane to argue that's the way sports should be.

This isn’t the place for this but that was a weak holding call. Especially in that situation. And I didn’t really care who won.
