49ers - Brock Purdy - Still and Always #1

Welcome Old 9er. If you're truly old you'll like my 9er fun fact, I'm much younger but I went to the same elementary school and high school as John Harty.

I am TRULY old, and I remember John Hardy from the 80's. Crazy how you could be 260-270 pound NT in those days. He took part in the iconic goal line stand in the 1981 super bowl against the Bengals. Found this article on Harty: Click Here

It's insane how much stock NFL GM's put on measurables over intangibles. Lance is basically Mitch Trubisky who turned one notable year in college into a first round pick. Yeah you need size and ball speed and all that. But with a one year track record there's a huge risk of it being fools gold.
You're absolutely right...and the template exists if GMs would just do a little research...

Brock will likely start as QB1, but the 9ers wanted Lance for a reason, they will give him every opportunity to prove himself during pre-season camp. And I don't blame them for doing so.

They aren’t going to replace a Super Bowl winning QB. Brock is following the Brady path to superstardom.

Grant Cohn wants in Brock now huh? The twitter loud mouth who in the preseason said Brock had one of the weakest arms he's ever seen
Some of the preseason deep balls were wounded ducks if i recall. He's looked amazing and a lot better than camp/pre-season.

He's earned this success

if they end up going with Lance next year, they will probably keep Purdy as the backup considering how favorable his contract is.
I haven't followed pro ball until BP emerged, so I don't know how this business works.

Such a paltry contract in light of what BP has done for this team. Is it likely the owner will give Purdy a bonus for his good work this season? Will the 49ers consider an updated/new contract for Purdy next season?

Honestly I haven't seen a 49er QB like Purdy since Montana. It's nuts to say just anyone can thrive in that system when you look at all the QBs under Shanahan that haven't gotten it like Purdy. It's one of those mystical matches between coach and player that come up so rarely. The article states neurological testing reveals Purdy to be in the top 3% of 120 QBs tested and compares him to Drew Brees.

Ya, no. Rookie contracts ain't getting ripped up even after 6+ games really good games or even 36 for that matter. He's basically stuck until after 2025 on his current deal.

This is the best counter argument to anyone claiming Purdy’s success is only attributable to the coach, system, and players around him.

Fact of the matter is that other QBs have been on that team with that coach in that system and not been able to replicate the success.

If this is an experiment, there is a control and there is a variable.

With that said, if you want to talk about the impact of Christian McCaffrey on the 49ers this year I would entertain that discussion as it’s more logically sound. But none of the haters are.

I don't think Purdy is as talented as some of the other QBs who played this weekend, but I think an argument could be made that he played the best out of the QBs that played this weekend. He is in a great situation with the 49ers, but what he has done is amazing.
Listening to various analysts who have played/coached the game, what I am hearing them rave about is BP's mobility/escapability, and his poise. Then they toss in his accuracy.

Pete Carroll said watching BP out there reminded him of Fran Tarkenton. That is interesting.

Mobility, poise and accuracy most likely will take a quarterback a far way.

Sears with nice things to say about Brock, and he doesn't give Kittle all the credit!

This is actually one of the more rational takes I’ve heard from the media on this topic.

Gives Purdy props for the excellent play? Check.

Acknowledges that it’s very possible this excellence would not be achieved on lesser teams? Check.

Immediately says “but that’s okay, it shouldn’t diminish what he’s doing”? Check.

Notes no other successful QB has ever done it all by themselves? Check.

Nope, per league rules the contract cannot be altered, on the other hand, I bet I could retire on a 1% commission of his endorsement deals this off-season if this thing keeps rolling.

I also don’t understand the sentiment that the Niners completely need to move on from Lance. They have zero reason to move him, his salary for next year is $3.76 mil and combined with Brock’s base of 900k you’re paying basically $4.5 million (plus a practice team QB probably)for your QB room. Garrapolo made 7 mil this year alone, so they’re still coming out ahead.

It does make Lance a relatively expensive backup, but with a cheap starter who cares?

This is really the biggest sticking point for some that don't want to give Brock too much credit. That team started reaching a whole new level after CMC joined the team, 17 ppg before and 32 ppg after. Even Jimmy G was trending upward by the time he got hurt.

Purdy could go down a couple paths for his career, obviously we won’t know for years.

One thing I’ve thought of are the similarities to hype after both Matt Cassel and Jimmy G had their first breakout years. Cassel got a lot to go to KC, had a good follow up year, and then cratered. Jimmy G has been steadily decent, but that’s it - despite the QB friendly system.

Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of comps where a guy shoots out of the cannon his first game and never looks back. But, if Brock could stay in a system where he can be a facilitator and distributor rather than the offensive star, he could certainly stay at a high level.

Yep. Spending under 5% of their cap on the QB room the next couple of years and that's basically already spent money. Bosa going to want to get paid after 2023 as will some other guys.

Yeah, he wins 1 or 2 more and his endorsement deals are going to be off the charts.
