49ers - Brock Purdy - Still and Always #1

who the hell is this annoying man

He's a young reporter that's following in his dads footsteps.

His father, Lowell Cohn, is a retired 49ers reporter/columnist and appears on the his sons show every now and again. When he is on, he's a great listen, providing a historical perspective on Purdy and his level of play.

Lots of people pointing out this is not true.

Yeah. Don't care.

What is completely shortsighted are the people saying he's a system QB. Look at the YAC!

Cool. Now why do those players have solid YAC? Maybe ball placement is a part? Decision making by the QB mixed in there?

Montana and Young benefited from Rice running wild after the catch too.

If this is their angle, the odds are ridiculously stacked in their favor and it’s one of the most preposterous positions ever taken in sports.

By my count, there are less than 35 quarterbacks who have ever one a Super Bowl. Given the thousands of people who have played that position and the thousands more than never even sniffed the field, you’re already a statistical anomaly to even go deep in the playoffs. Let alone get all the way there and then win. So it’s about the easiest and douchiest take ever to say “that rookie QB selected with the last pick in the draft isn’t good enough to win it all”.

To that point, if that’s their standard then even crazier. It’s not as though people celebrating this Purdy story were predicting a year ago he was going to be in this position and lead the 49ers to a super bowl victory.

I just don’t get the hate. Its literally insane how anyone as a sports far can not appreciate what has happened the last 8 weeks.
There’s things about Purdy that a segment of talking heads would hate no matter how good he is.

Talking to locals, he is not well liked. A lot of hot takes and he bags on Jimmy G quite a bit, who is still a fan favorite. Watching a couple of his video reviews, he seems ok, but I can see how locals might get tired of hearing from him.

Been listening to some national radio shows today and you are really starting to hear more push back on the Purdy love. Not a majority by any means, but there is a certain segment of the sports world that just can't stand everyone having a good time with a story and feels a need to **** all over it. They are definitely getting louder and you can tell they are really starting to invest in his failure so they can say "I told you so!" Hopefully Purdy can keep the hype train rolling all the way to the Super Bowl!
the national tv shows (good morning football, get up, first take, cowherd) they all seem to be high on him and high on the niners

He’s quite a bit prickly but he’s also honest and not afraid to push back on the team, coaches, organization, etc which in my opinion is a tad refreshing.

That's sports reporting/blabbing.

All QBs are products of their system.

Two playoff QBs have a YAC higher than 6 yards on the season. Purdy at 6.2 yds and Mahomes at 6.6. It's simply throwing to the open guys and letting them go to work. Purdy's depth of target, though, is one of lowest of the playoff QBs, because that's the type of offense they run. It isn't a bomb throwing scheme. For reference, Jimmy G has a slightly higher depth of target, over a yard lower depth of completion, and a YAC of 7.0 yds with an almost identical completion percentage.

Not every completion, but still 15/18.

18 completions
12 first downs
3 touchdowns
I think where the confusion lies is some people don't realize that a TD also gets scored as a first down in the stat book. He threw 15 first downs, (12 regular and 3 TDs) in his 18 completions. Some probably just saw the stats and added them together.

Listen to his teammates. Or former players in general talk about him. They all speaking super positive and a lot are amazed that he’s doing what he’s doing.

I don’t see how you start Lance after this. Brock is playing with house money right now. Worst case scenario he is Finishes 7-1 (If you count Miami game) with a passer rating over those 8 games that would be best in the league and his only loss in the playoffs against a 12-5 Dallas team or a rematch against Brady (how many people have beat him twice in a year)?

I think Lance has way more to prove at this point if you set expectations aside and base on results
You don’t. And they won’t. Brock Purdy is QB1 for the 49ers until he struggles on the field for 2-3 games in a row. Even then Lance will have to prove in practice next season that he deserves a shot over Brock.

He reminds me of Love at GB. Drafted because of somewhat blind belief, but even more so for Lance. Both should be really strong QBs but I expect both to be journeymen like Geno Smith. Maybe they have a breakout season down the line like Geno, but doubt either does it with their rookie stops.

It's insane how much stock NFL GM's put on measurables over intangibles. Lance is basically Mitch Trubisky who turned one notable year in college into a first round pick. Yeah you need size and ball speed and all that. But with a one year track record there's a huge risk of it being fools gold.

Brock will likely start as QB1, but the 9ers wanted Lance for a reason, they will give him every opportunity to prove himself during pre-season camp. And I don't blame them for doing so.
