Anybody actually still excited about the future

What's not to be excited about for next year?


  1. 4 returning starters.
  2. 1st team Big 12 player returning in Brackins.
  3. Large freshman and sophomore classes with another year of maturation.
  4. Inside scorers: Brackins, Hamilton
  5. Outside shooters: Lucca, Eik, JVB, Christopherson, maybe Gilstrap
  6. Four new players: Gilstrap, Colvin, Christopherson, Pomlee
  7. Greater athleticism due to the new guys (or at least due to three of the new guys)
  8. Another year in the weight room for Diante; another year of peanut butter and jelly for Hamilton!
  9. Competition at several positions despite 4 returning starters (DB, Buck and Colvin at the 1; Christo, Eik, Lucca, Colvin, Booze at the 2; Gilstrap and Lucca at the 3; no competition at the four; probably little competition at the 5 unless Pomlee wows).
  10. A quality coach who's a quality guy.
Granted, this year we were supposed to vie for the NIT but come up just short. Now coming up just short isn't even an option. As a result, it's looking highly unlikely that we'll go into next year with a little momentum, which would have been #11 on my list above. Still...

Then why have game-time coaches at all? Just send the players out there to do whatever they want.

The "style" is the framework that a coach develops to put his team in the best position to win. As such, the style most certainly affects whether a team will win or lose games. If you aren't running an offensive style that generates enough scoring attempts to outscore your opponents, given what you know about your team's shooting abilities and turnover tendancies, that style gives you very little chance to win.
 
I am still excited. I am hoping that Brackins sticks around next year so that McD can actually "build" something rather than consistently starting over each year.

People need to remember that we have lost our best player each year he has been here. When you are trying to build a program and keep losing your best player, constantly bringing in true freshman, you are not going to win right away. Greg has not brought in immediate Juco players to fill in the holes. He has consistently said he wants to build this program the right way. Unfortunately, this doesn't work if you are losing your best "built" player every year.

I'm enjoying this season much more than the last two. I don't know why. The results are any better but for some reason I still feel we are getting closer to where we want to be.

Can't place my finger on it, but I'm still optimistic.

Couldn't agree more.... I think you could see that in the fans at the Kansas game as well
 
I am excited for the future with the recruits and commits he has coming in. I like the players we have now too just wish things could turn around for them. I would like to see other players score more to help Craig out and keep defenses on their heals. I think once Greg gets more talent on the floor his system will work better than what we are seeing right now. I am on the fence with Greg, but support him and hope he can improve this team yet this season. I know the cupboards were bare when he took over and to recover will take three to four years like it or not. Everyone has their own opinion, but so much negativity going around is not the answer to these young student athletes who work hard to be here and to recruits who read these web sites as well.

I will always be a Cyclone fan no matter what so I think we need to leave Greg alone and just let him do his job, lets face it who would want to deal with what he deals with everyday. Could you handle it?

One of the best posts about the whole situation. A solid up-tempo offense maximizes the talent you have on the floor and makes average players good ones. This year's team is nowhere near ready to play the transition game but being unable to adapt to the level of play of our competition and not making adjustments has really hurt us this year.
Running a slow down offense that goes through long stretches of not scoring is something that isn't going to work, we need more opportunities for easy baskets.

I'm not trying to say style has no impact on outcomes. It can cost you or win you a game now and again. But it's much much outweighed by talent. There is not one "style" utilized in the B12 (or anywhere else for that matter) that would magically transform this team into a NCAA team.

Franky, because of the lack of major talent on this team outside Brackins there are very few "styles" we could even be using.

Certain styles attract talent as we've seen in recent ISU history.

Are you referring to Stinson and Blalock who were recruited under LE's style or Taggert who was recuiting under Morgans?

Maybe not NCAA, but I'm pretty sure there are styles out there that could generate victories over CU, SDSU, Drake, and cut down on the vicious blowouts...

Are you sure it's the style? There are always TONS of teams that lose games they shouldn't.... I'm not making excuse because we should have won but I think there a lot more factors that contribute to a loss than the style necessarily.... People weren't complaining about his style when he took NORTHERN IOWA to ncaa tourney and almost beat ga tech

I doubt I could handle it, but for the 2 million dollars Greg has made while coaching here I'd be willing to give it a shot.
 
Back to the title of this thread... excited for the future? NO freaking way. I have seen NOTHING besides the play of CB that leads me to think we can compete for a NCAA run.
 
I am always optimistic. I'll get excited for ISU MBB (again) when I see some of the following:

Outscore an opponent in the last 2 minutes of the game.

Score the last points before halftime instead of give up points.

Build a 5 point lead into a 10 point lead.

Once we get to within 6 points after trailing the whole game, don't give up 8 straight points.

Start the game and second half like we are angry.

We did the 2nd one last night. Does that mean you're excited for ISU MBB?:wink::yes:

Didn't happen. We scored 3 and CU scored 8 in the last 2 minutes.


But the point is that these are indicators we are moving in the right direction. Especially, if we start seeing them consistently.
