Winter tires - General Thread

This thread reminds me of my HS years in the late 90's. Had a car that was rear wheel drive and made before I was born so would switch out the rear tires for winter tires but now thought everyone just has all weather tires. My SUV is all wheel drive with all weather tires and those tires are expensive enough as it is that there is no way I would invest in winter tires that probably would not perform any better.

There you go you don't know. World of difference between all season and winter tires in bad conditions particularly in cornering and stopping. I find AWD and 4WD to be total wastes. I have a steep driveway that you can't even sit stationary on with all season tires. If you try to go up fail and try to stop you will slide out into the road very rapidly. My daughter who just got her permit found that out in that early snow.

On the OP, the rubber is softer so average temp in your area should mostly determine when. I generally switch around Thanksgiving in sw Iowa. Wheels with winter tires is the way to go. Quick easy switch. I have no storage issue so it's a no brainer. People have really forgotten how much better winter tires are in freezing conditions.

Think maybe you misunderstood. Minnesota has more snow and longer winters than Iowa and even with the harsher winters, I've never had any issues or problems navigating the roads (no accidents, spin outs, etc.) with good A/T tires, as long as there is sufficient tread.

If you like your snow tires, by all means go for it. I think they're a waste of space and money.

“I probably won't be seeing my parents at Thanksgiving.”

The word “probably” here has me confused... In a different thread... you stated that you self isolate for 10 days after every home game. If you go to the game Saturday (like you stated you would)... you should have used a different word than “probably“...

Again - you’re a hypocrite and maybe even turning into a liar.

You just here to be an *******?

Bump.

Shopping for new winter boots for Das Audi. Down to replacing with the same Dunlap SP Winter Sport D3's or switching to Bridgestone Blizzacks. Price at dealer is a wash. I know Blizzacks are popular, anyone drive them and have an opinion to share?

I like the Dunlaps, generally. They are the best tires I've ever had for slippery conditions. They are noisy. From what I read the Blizzacks are better on dry and less noisy compared to the Dunlaps. So, sort of debating between crazy good on slippery versus good on slippery but quieter. Kinda thinking Blizzacks per the reviews since most of my driving will be cold weather but not crazy slippery that often.

What about for your bike?

I have lived in Iowa my whole life. Front wheel drive and four wheel drive eliminated snow tires from my thoughts. I think my last snow tires were studded in the 1980's. Once in a great while I still hear studs on the streets in the winter.

I use Blizzacks on my VUE and Town and Country and have been really pleased. Only thing I don’t like is having to store them. For my Camry, I tried All Weather tires from Nokian and Michelin. They get the snow rating and hold up through out the year, granted they are only 60k mileage tires - love them. They are quiet and no storage required.

Blizzack sounds like a weed strain

I store them at my parents' house, so it depends. I'm contemplating not doing them this year since I'll be teleworking and no basketball games. And I probably won't be seeing my parents at Thanksgiving.
No BB what's up with that?

The post was from November 2020, the season with only 1500 fans and no season tickets. I did manage to snag tickets to 2 games that year though ;)
Realized that post posting sorry about that

Haven't had a need for them in awhile but I put Blizzak tires on all my Subarus and Evos. They've never let me down or left me stranded. (Outside of my own doing anyways)

Blizzaks have to be one of the best all-time brand names for a product. I had them for 6 winters and they were amazing.

Oh and just wanted to note I think its amazing someone put Nokians on a Camry. Wow!

Football games, as weird as they were, that year were a lot more fun than I would have ever expected. I will cherish those memz.
