Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

I was under the assumption that the payouts would be per team selected. I think that would be satisfactory to all parties.
I expect a Great Compromise.
A chunk per conference (senate), and a chunk for each conference based on # of teams selected (house). Individual teams might get a smaller chunk as well to themselves.

So if 300m per year, maybe:
20m per conference (p5+1 for g5),
10m per team to the conferences,
5m per team to the teams

So 20% to the individual teams, 40% equal to conferences, and 40% by selections.

Not sure if that would sate the SEC and B1G or not. If they got 6 of the 12, then they are taking 43% overall.

The playoff specifics haven't been agreed upon by the P5 & G5 Commissioners, along with ND's AD. If they each have equal voice, then I would agree that Oregon & Wash might be able to structure Pac12 revenue sharing in a way to keep them in a Pac10.

After all, each P5 conference could get $300M+ in playoff $ if the payout rates remain the same as today. That's a pretty big chunk of what could be discretionary money for a conference where a conference's team(s) that make the playoffs could get a much larger share.

Other possibilities that the Big10 & SEC could push are:
  • Maybe there are less than 6 auto qualifiers among Conference champs.
  • Add a stipulation that all 6 auto qualifiers be ranked in top 12.
  • The biggest influence could be the CFB Playoff split. I have seen some speculation the Big10 & SEC will push for at least 2x the split that the ACC, Big12 & Pac12 receive. They could also push for an even split among P5 plus a fixed amount to each conference for each of their teams that gets a playoff bid.

Is it really an auto bid for the top 6 Champions if you have to be ranked in the top 12 to make a 12 team playoff? Lol

I could see they have to be ranked in the Top 25 at least… but Top 12 defeats the purpose of the auto bid.

I think top 15 might be where it ends up. Outside of that there will be some pushback

What it does is hose down teams that are upset winners of their conf champ game. The counter to that is going divisionless, so you don't have a 8-4 team upset your 11-1 top dog. Which is why everyone is going divisionless now.

It also screws the G5 programs, it would be real easy to imagine the best G5 champ being 11-1 and ranked 20th.

I don't frequent this thread. Is there any actual news on realignment in the last several weeks?

If they were worried of pushback they wouldn’t have said anything about auto bids. They would have left the criteria the same, where the top four make it, and just expand to 12 where the top 12 make it.
If they didn’t expand the auto bids a couple conferences would have a hard time getting in. The auto bids gets every conference to sign up for the new system and gives the illusion of parity/accessibility.

Ha- exactly. If you have to be ranked in the top 12 for a 12 team playoff then there is no such thing as an auto bid since you’re just taking the top 12 straight up….and you get all the Barry Alvarez folks on the committee to weight it so that anything close goes to a big 10 team

As a fan do you want to see a 20th ranked team get one of the 6 auto bids?

People want the playoff to be inclusive, but over the last decade most of the G5 teams ranked in top 15 in final poll will be in the Big12 go forward. The main exception being Boise.

Also what if we see the Pac12 dissolve and only have 4 power conferences?

Seems like there has to be a restriction on how low an auto qualifier can be ranked.

Then obviously the number of auto bids will be changed if there is one less power conference.
