Property Tax Question

Probably a hoarder with mental issues.

Oh they are hoarders. I'll post pics later.

I haven't even got into the Dog issues. We've wanted to call them in on dog issues but my wife is worried they might retaliate.

I see a post going like this

"Hey Curt, do you mind if I fish your pond?" 2 minutes later the guy next door walks over

We came home one night from racing in Webster City, Saturday night around 1 AM, pulling into the driveway we see flashlight lights around the pond. It was those neighbors fishing in the dark when they knew we weren't home. I told them very impolitely not to fish in my pond in the middle of the night because I don't want their kids falling in a drowning, if they want to fish they need to do it in the day when I'm home and they need to ask. They haven't fished again (that I know of).

I'm pretty sure these people don't have internet.

That's putting it nicely.

Update:
I called the County Developmental Office this morning. They have sent numerous letters and received no response. The guy said he actually is finishing up the paperwork to take them to District Court and hoped to have the paper work done today. Seems a couple other neighbors have been also complaining. He asked if he could come walk on my side of the property line to take pictures and I told him he can do whatever he needs.

Did you get an answer to the question on property taxes? Is he a disabled veteran? Because if he's simply not paying them, I can't imagine they'd let that go on for years.

I honestly don't understand how Polk County comes up with their assessments sometimes. My previous house was assessed significantly more than my neighbors who had comparable homes all built in the same era and some almost identical floor plans too. For instance I had a neighbor right across the street from me with the exact same house and lot size but for some reason I was assessed about 20k more than his was. Only thing I could think of was recent sales on my house and he had lived in his for awhile. I challenged the assessment the first year I owned it because they tried to assess the value at like 10k more than I had just bought it for and they adjusted it down to the sale price basically but I presented about half a dozen houses on my block, some that had just sold the same time mine had that were sold for more than I paid for but assessed significantly lower plus 2 other houses nearly identical to mine that were not comparable either. I got no explanation from the assessors office or board I had to meet with to file my protest of the assessment raise why that was.

Probably some BS calculation that without someone coming out and doing an in person value appraisal of the property stuff like this is going on where some place is significantly under or over assessed value because no one has ever challenged it. Another reason why I will never vote to raise sales taxes with the promise of lower property taxes because that is easily manipulated by raising everyone's assessments to compensate for the lower tax rate so you are going to pay for it 1 way or another anyways.

I'm pretty convinced it's fairly arbitrary. My neighborhood is full of houses built at the same time, often by the same builder. Other than people who've improved their properties, the values ought to move in lockstep with one another. Nope. One neighbor went out and got an appraisal and they lowered his assessment, just like that. I cited that appraisal in my own protest and they did nothing. I went as far as meeting with the panel or whatever the next step is, and it was just a bunch of retirees who couldn't care less what I said. The whole process sucks.

How is the Webster city track compared to 5-10 years ago? Better or worse condition?

Appraisals based heavily on comparable sales definitely can be very misleading.

I haven't called the Assessor yet, the junk call was my #1 priority.
