Ames Doesn't Make Top 150 in Country

They'll be in the Top 50 once they win the state championship. Next year, look for a Duece game against a Chicago or Indi team.

Question for you Iowa folks. How many games are in your high school basketball seasons? In KS, it's 20 and then the playoffs, meaning the most a team can play is 25 games. This, and other silly rules like not allowing any contact with coaches except for during the season, is why KS rarely produces major D-1 talent.

I saw that some Texas schools have already played over 20 games, and now I know that's another (of many) reasons Texas can crank out D-1 talent.

Also, nice to see Colvin's HS on there.

Apparently Linn-Mar has been like 120-15 since 2003, constantly being ranked in the top three, its no surprise they are on that list. Also, the east side of the state dominates state basketball.

2008-Iowa City High def. Davenport Central
2007-Linn-Mar def. Bettendorf
2006- Des Moines Hoover def. Pleasant Valley
2005-Bettendorf def. Linn-Mar
2004-Linn-Mar def. Waterloo East
2003-Waterloo East def. North Scott

That's 11 of the 12 previous teams to compete for the state title in 4A have come from eastern Iowa. Until central or western Iowa shows it can compete with the east, it makes sense for teams like Ames to be left off that list.

And before anyone mentions it, yes I know the east is far more populated.

Good question? When I grew up in Iowa we played 18 games but that was long ago. I live in LA now and my son's HS team is currently 21-1 and they have 2 non-district games and 10 district games before the playoffs start...a total of 34 games in their regular season.

I see Hopkins (MN) is ranked #22. They're an interesting team to follow up here, as they have four guys going to a D1 school for college, led by Royce White. I think their other starter may be close to D1 quality as well. I don't know a ton about them, but they are a big deal up here right now.

Personally, I think this is a joke trying to rank HS teams from the entire country. Too many teams, too many variables...this is just ridiculous. There are 4 or 5 teams listed in the top 100 from LA...my son's team has not played any of them but if you look at scores from common opponents it would appear that we could play with any of those 4 or 5 teams...but I would never say that I think we are one of the 100 best HS teams in the US.

Whitney Young (Colvin's team) is 81, four spots below linn-mar.... i know that whitney young team would dominate linn-mar, or ames for that matter

Yes, that is crazy stupid. Whitney Young would beat some college teams. USAtoday had them at 17th in the US earlier in the year in a top 25 they published. And I thought they were moving up since.

Whitney Young plays on ESPNU on Jan 19th if you'd like to watch them play.

Iowa boys' basketball has a 21-game limit on the regular season. In the smallest class (1A), you have to win either 4 or 5 postseason games (everybody qualifies for postseason) to make the state tournament. From there, 3 wins makes you a champ.

Class 1A schools could play 28 or 29 total games.
Class 2A: 28
Class 3A: 27
Class 4A: 26 or 27

There are fewer teams in each class as you go up, so you lose a postseason round.

In Florida we played around 25-28 games before post season, depending on how you did in holiday tournaments. Our school would put up a small billboard for 20 win teams, recognizing all the players and signifigant highlights of the season.

The national rankings are a strange nut to crack. They just had the USA Today poll when I was in school, and my sophmore year we didn't crack the top 25 untill we got to 21-1 and jumped from unranked to 17th, even though we were third in our division in the state. We also proceeded to lose our first district game and get knocked out, making us the only 20 win team NOT to get a billboard...

You can see the boards behing Urban Meyer's daughter in this pic

This is complete bs, ames is way better and unlike linn-marr ames is still undeafted. And o ya Whitney Young would absolutely destroy linn-marr

Just for a point of reference though, when talking about the rankings, my team that was ranked 17th had 8 guys with D1 offers (2 seniors, 3 juniors, 1 soph, 2 freshmen) and 7 play D1 basketball (3 guys played D1 Baseball, two with basketball offers, two D1 walk ons).

Ya and ames has a top 5 talent, a center with a full ride to isu for fb, a guy signed with yale, a guard who can go anywhere for soccer and will prob get d1 bball offers, and another junior that has multiple d1offers but will prob walk on at isu.

They are definately worthy of Top 150. Don't be suprised to see them make a HUGE jump into the rankings at some time... The top 25, with the way some high schools recruit these days, may be another story though...
