Sad thing about the portal & NIL

Your ignorance here shows. Having employed "kids" thirty years ago versus now gives me the right to call BS. If you say a word of correction they don't like or look at them wrong,, out the door they go. They get coddled everywhere they go. Maybe you're one of them "kids"?
Nope. I'm not a "kid.". I just know my history.

Older generations have been calling younger generations irresponsible, lazy, and coddled since long before any of us were born. There are texts from the middle ages with the exact same sentiment.

It's just human nature to assume that the younger generations are stupider than you are. It's still wrong. But it's normal.

This thread started bad, and keeps getting worse.

There are still loads of hard working kids. Always been lazy ones too.

At the risk of sounding like a fool - wouldn't it make sense to use NIL $ as justification to pull a player's scholarship and give it to someone else (or, gasp, re-allocate those funds to other sports not named Football or Men's Basketball)? Can this be spun into a positive for the schools?

No different than a kid getting denied financial aid due to the parents being loaded - except in this case the student is pulling in $200K per year...they can pay their own way.

Heck, they could even say they 'worked their way through college'. Win-win?

sorta- :jimlad:

NIL made scholarship limits obsolete. A player can be paid whatever somebody wants to pay them whether they are on scholarship or not. Walk on... give you 200k. That will cover tuition and books, etc.

Yep, it will be like when Nebraska had 125 kids on scholly. If you can’t use them, you ask why do that? If they are on your team, even if not playing, they can’t play for the competition.

Has anybody got Bono's take on all this yet?

Dickie Roberts got messed up with early money. His soul was crushed, never got to play a normal intramural basketball game, never had to work hard to get a kiss. It was all thrown at him as a young person. tragedy.

hate to be a coach now with this nil and boosters. if someone is paying a lot for a player and they aren’t playing i’m sure they will be having a talk with the coach. it’s sort of like the town doctor or lawyer whose kid isn’t playing

This reminds me of something that happened at my high school. I won't tell you where it was, but our mascot was the Beavers. We had a kid on the team whose dad owned the local hardware store named Scotty. He wasn't the best player, but he really hustled and had been playing most of his life in his driveway. One day, Scotty just kind of "wolfed out" and started playing amazing. I mean, like dunking, sliding all over, spinning balls on his finger, real Globetrotter type stuff.

The lesson here is, the Clones just need to find kids like Scotty.

FWIW I consider you among the crustiest old men here.

Jared and Chris touched on this in their latest podcast but I think NIL money will come back down to earth in 3-5 years. Most big boosters are businesspeople. My guess is after a couple times of paying a kid good money only to have him/her not perform, get arrested, etc. and they will go back to donating to the overall athletics dept.

I also think there will be some blue blood programs that will suffer due to their kids losing focus or being resentful of teammates. (Yes I'm looking at you Tejas.) In the mean time NIL will continue to have a negative impact on college athletics IMO.
Lol, yeah right. Good luck with that.

Tuition and books? Maybe I missed something. Is going to class a requirement?

I guess one still has to pay for the "honor" of attending a university........but going to class?

Older generation: how did these kids get like this?

Pretty sure older generations don't know what to do with people my age who don't want to be exploited for no gain. My contract says I work 40 hours I set down what I'm working on at the 40th hour. I get to work 7 minutes early I'm not logging in to check emails. It's my day off I am not answering a work phone call. Etc....

I trust that not allowing teenage basketball players to make "too much" money will apply to young people making music, going into acting, starting up tech companies, investing in the stock market and so on. Any rules to prevent someone from making a change to make more money will surely apply to everyone in the work force. Why should anyone be allowed to make a job change just because they can make more money at another business. I would hope if someone changes jobs they should not be able to work for a year. And, where are all these post of indignation over baseball players signing professional contracts as soon as they graduate from high school? Certainly, that is not right. Plus, when are we going to straighten out Europe and the rest of the world that have been allowing teenagers to sign professional sports contracts for decades without making them play for high school and college teams for free. Damn commies....
