Tyrese Hunter Entering the Transfer Portal - NIL Speculation

I'll take a wait & see approach.

The college athletics model is going to drastically change. Players getting paid is here to stay. I have no idea what the structure will be.

- Do we have university/athlete revenue sharing?
- Are there sport/team caps?
- Do more University Presidents cash in their chips and defund institutional support of college athletics. Maybe not so much at the P5 level. But at some point do schools like UNI want to continue subsidize college sport.
Of course they do. There is no bigger marketing, alumni, and community involvement driver than Athletics. That's before we get into the discussion of providing educational opportunities for a minority cohort that every school in the country is in competition to attract to diversify their campus communities.

I think maybe he just didn’t click with the coaches like he did with Prohm. Gave it a shot. Now money is calling too and it makes the decision easy
Boy, if and that would be a big 'if', imo, there were no signs of that and he played defense like a mother. (Click w/ Prohm wouldn't be in the equation, imo)
George isn't implying anything other than this may not be all about money.

An 18 year old who stuck out a coaching change.

TJ was not the original recruiter. Doesn't mean anything bad........just wasn't the guy.

ISU is no blue blood and Tyrese could have went anywhere. He stuck it out at the school after they fired the guy that recruited him and was a big part in ISU winning 22 games and making the sweet 16. And now he wants to leave.

Look at Grill.......ISU to UNVL to ISU. If TJ left now......it would be a safe bet Grill would transfer again. Maybe to where TJ is going.

This stuff happens. Is a little frustrating TJ couldn't keep that type of talent, yes......but it is what it is.

I'm under no illusion that TJ is the end all-be all of recruiting like some have painted him. No one should be. He did a great job of mixing left over talent with transfers. Now he will have to do it all again.

Who knows.......22 wins and a sweet 16 might be the best ISU get out of TJ. I hope not, but I don't know.
Well duh, that was my point. It absolutely does mean George is implying something. I didn't say it was something bad, (but meaning not all about money). I was just saying its too bad we have to always go off of assumptions. Because 99% of the pre-chatter was about NIL. Generic "in my best interest stuff" is all we'll ever get, but I hope he was big enough to give TJ & the coaching staff the entire truth. Then they can learn from it too.

I think @cyclonehomer said it best, we can replace his production from last season and even exceed it, but we cannot replace his upside. It sucks because we are losing what could have been.

Find a solid guard in the portal, add AJ Green, and a couple other bigs and we should be much better than last season, even with his departure.

Prepare to be poached then. SEC is bringing their bags of money.
Kansas, Duke and Kentucky have been getting poached by other teams for YEARS. Most have been scholarship players in search of more minutes or walk ons in search of a scholarship/more minutes.

The 2022 KU roster lost 5 players from the previous season that transferred out.
2021 had 1 transfer out
2020 had 4 transfer out
2019 had 1 transfer out
2018 had 3 transfer out
2017 was the last season that did not have a player from the previous year transfer out
2016 had 1 player transfer out
2015 had 2 players transfer out

This has been going on forever.

You realize Iowa State is a helluva lot closer to the top of the food chain than the bottom, right?

The complete 180 that's going to go on if AJ Green heads to Ames is going to really be something...
Even if his dad wasn't on staff, AJ Green would be coming here to play a higher level of basketball. I haven't heard of any specific NIL offerings he would be getting here. So not really the same comparison as Tyrese situation, imo.

The top of the college basketball food chain is larger than it has ever been. We are seeing more teams win conference titles in the P6 conferences. We are seeing more teams make runs to the Sweet Sixteen. We are seeing a bigger variety of teams make Final Fours. We are seeing more teams bubble up from out of the tourney to into the tourney in a year or two. This notion that NIL has shrunk the sport to a small group of uber spenders is simply not accurate.
First Final 4 in which NIL has been legal:

Kansas
UNC
Duke
Villanova

But yes. We are seeing a bigger variety of teams make the Final 4.

We are still pretty early into NIL though, however I hope you're right.

I think it's worth acknowledging this was probably alot to process for a 19 year old, especially one without living parents.

The money he gets now doesn't look like a ton when compared to a second NBA contract. Monte got 3 years/27 million. THT got 3 years/30 million. Hali's rookie deal has him at 4 years/18 million, and with the way he's playing I'd imagine a big extension is in his future. Naturally the schools that will pay you high dollar NIL are going to be chalked fully of other talented players. So you have to be pretty confident in yourself to believe not only will they give you money now, but you will find yourself in a position to have ample time/opportunity to show your abilities for the NBA.

This point doesn't track to the issue at hand. NIL hasn't played out yet, but it would seem to push power back to the elite and not the other way around.
The only hope is that the NIL bucks are not quite as plentiful at the top and they actually lose some bench talent to small $ elsewhere. Everyone will still be at risk for this poaching though.
Kentucky is the only place I have seen big $$$ happening. They have a local Porsche dealership that is hooking up players with sweet rides.

Remy Martin scored a Toyota Corolla from a Lawrence car dealer. Whoopee! There aren't any Toyota dealers in Ames?!? What happened to that Wilson Toyota dealer who always had signs up in the student section?

Read the room. This ain't the place for your pro-KU nonsense. Not today.

Quentin Grimes was a Top 20 recruit and led Houston to the Final Four the year after he left. Does that count?
OK, Tuco....
