Tyrese Hunter Entering the Transfer Portal - NIL Speculation

This absolutely sucks. But there’s a lot of fatalist overreactions in here.

This NIL thing is just starting. There’s a lot of things that’ll change over the next few years that we can do to help adjust to this change.

I don’t think schools/businesses are going to want to toss out wads of cash forever. Some of it may become very unprofitable over time. It’s destined to have pitfalls as it currently stands.
Again, profit doesn't enter into NIL. The way it works is that the some mechanism exists by which players are enticed to campus with money. Whether private businesses see profits or whether the coveted recruit pans out has NOTHING to do with the equation. The "problem" is just an amplified version of the existing problem. Now, all constraints are gone. Rich and motivated donors have no need for bagmen and now no trepidation about paying giant sums of money.

Also, couple this with new media deals which could make the B1G & SEC essentially a tier above the Pac/B12/ACC. Not only will the P2 have more money to spend on NIL, but also the preference of top recruits. It's a nexus that has the potential to relegate ISU to a level that will end fan interest.

I'd love to know, specifically how this is an overreaction.

College sports has always been about money, but now it's more visible. I hate the direction of college sports, but you could see this direction coming It use to be a facilities arm race, now it's what you can offer a kid from a money standpoint. ISU just doesn't have deep pockets, nor will they ever. I'll be curious to see the financial impact this has on the state of Iowa.

There’s a difference between not having deep pockets and not using your deep pockets to pay for some kid to play basketball for the school you like.

I bet Fred loves recruiting even more now...

Fred loved the transfer market, couple weeks of recruiting, one visit, make a decision. Now just add some time for commercial discussions into that timeline, still nice and easy. It's the texting teenagers for years and telling 15-16 year olds how awesome they are that he didn't like.

What people need to understand is that ISU could have paid Tyrese, but it's not sustainable for a school like us to pay for what Tyrese could be, which is what other schools will be paying for.

It's going to be interesting to see how I feel about college basketball in 5 years.

I absolutely love the game of baseball, but I've developed a lot of disdain for major league baseball. It's too much of a business. Owners seem to care only about profits/losses. Players care about maximizing their next contract. It feels like CBB is going in that direction.

And I understand the same could potentially be said about professional sports in general. I believe the NFL is better because of the hard salary cap. You don't have your haves and have nots.

This feels like Duke, Kansas, North Carolina, Kentucky, etc. are going to be akin to the Dodgers & Yankees of the world. I guess you have to hope ISU will fall to a middle tier (and not the Pirates, A's, Royals zone), but maybe the lack of parody just leads to a lack of interest.

Is it this season or next season where they don't even care about scholarships anymore?

I mean if you're getting 750K a year to walk on at one school or 700K and a scholarship to go to another what is the difference?

Of course players aren't going to be thrilled about losing playing time to non scholarship pros being added to existing roster...so I guess that'll result in even more transferring.
Hey..what an idea. Never thought of that. So if you're full on scholarships, you can still give a sweet NIL deal to a big time player that just becomes available, but he's considered/registerd as a walk-on. Why wouldn't this happen.

Or VCU, but of course its totally different when they decide to come to ISU. It's a only a bad system when they leave ISU (unless they aren't producing and we pull their scholarship or strongly encourage them to move on - then also a positive thing).

This is cute, but the TH situation is on another scale, and it's only going to get bigger and more common.

It’s an overreaction to say “this is the end of college athletics” because you’re basically assuming the way things are now are how they will always be. That’s distorted logic.

If all but 15 programs benefit from this, that will not sustain. There’s far too many other programs that will not let these competitive balance issues go unnoticed. We’re not the only school here that’s “screwed”

Duke Kansas UNC Kentucky have always been the Dodgers and Yankees of CBB, and CBB (and CFB) have had much less parity than professional leagues for decades.

Why wouldn't every player enter the transfer portal every year? Are you only allowed to enter portal once without sitting out or is it only actually transferring?

If I'm a backup guard who isn't getting paid a fortune at UNC or wherever Tyrus is getting paid, I'm thinking about seeing if some other program might make me a better offer today. I certainly might feel different about transferring today than I did a few weeks ago.

Is there a limit to declaring to be in the portal or just a limit on the one time no-sit transfer?

Seems some players could really get screwed by pros coming in at the last minute to play over them.

One time for immediate eligibility. All others you gotta sit out

No intelligent people here are thinking ISU will be, can be or should be on that level. This is some invented nonsense contrarians are saying to make themselves feel better.

The intelligent people here are pointing out ISU will no longer even be able to remain at its historic level. Which is average among major conferences in hoops the past 25 years and historically barely competing in football.
